GOLF BALL LAUNCHER ???

I bought a golf ball launcher and a H&R Handi-rifle chambered in 223. Was going to use it at charity golf matches for a fund raiser by "selling" a ball for $XXX, and let the buyer see if they can get closest to a flag set up down range using my supplied blank ammo. The problem is that it LAUNCHES the heck out of them! Probably 400-500 yards! At a 45 degree angle the ball just disappears, and lands WAY too far away for my intended use.
My Question---is there a way to safely vent off some of the gases to keep at least a bit of control over max distance?
BTW- I already have several businesses lined up for prizes, and a machine shop willing to make the modifications.
Thanks for any ideas.

I don't know. You might want to give Alex Baldwin a call. He knows a lot about blank guns.😲
I hope I'm a bit more responsible than that damned fool!!!!
This is for a Contender but might work in your H&R. Not sure how far a 22 blank would send a golf ball though.

Edit; Scratch this idea. The Contender has a different firing pin setup so that it can use both rimfire and centerfire ammo. Your Handy Rifle doesn't. Sorry I suggested the adapter. Bob
Maybe reducing the charge some would be easier. I’m not real sure what you mean by a golf ball launcher. Does it attach to a rifle like an old fashioned grenade launcher? If It is as I imagine, venting the tube would allow gas to escape, and reduce the range.
I assume you're using military blanks for launching? I was going to suggest to handload some detuned blanks, But Bob's idea is much better. Run with that.
22 RF blanks are woefully underpowered for that.
My machinist friend suggested boring some holes at a forward angle to "bleed" off some pressure. We may give that a shot (so to speak) 💥

Google it. It is a fun gimmick to play with at the range. At 25 yards, a golf ball will penetrate a 2X6 pine board.
I just googled 22 golf ball launcher and they claim up to 200 yards with a 22lr blank. It looks like fun and should be a good way to raise money. Bob
Ok, looked it up and now I understand how it works. Yes drilling gas escape holes should reduce the range, just do a few at a time until you are getting the range you want.
And thank you, I now know what to tell the wife to get me for my birthday.
Waltermoe, a word of caution. Shoot those blanks in an AR15 at your own risk, they will really "nasty" up your firearm in a horrible way. Took me 2 days to clean mine after 25 rounds. The gas tube was almost plugged completely closed.
Use EXTREME care when attempting to 'adjust' factory loaded blanks or making your own. The powder used in blanks is twitchy.
