the old saying comes in handy for sure

I have seen many a person get promoted ( and not for there work efforts just a quota to fill to meet standards ) only to become some others boss that were less than polite, to them and we all know people do not forget and I have been told many times by the new bosses they remembered when this guy or gal and what they said and now they would be sorry .. revenged is best served served cold or something like that the other old saying goes

When I was a totally green machinist I walked out of a job only to come back to the same job as an apprentice. I was the laughing stock of the whole place.. Had a retiree do the training. That place closed down and moved and I moved on to a more difficult aerospace machine shop. Huge difference in tolerances. Those same employees worked there too. About 7 yrs later I moved on to a management job but still worked troubleshooting on the floor . Boy did those same folks act different and some basically did not like me. I told them right away ...just do your job. Most did. And I recall in a management meeting, the owner was pushing to get things done. I stood up and said... Dick we all know you are in charge..you do not have to keep reminding us. 6 months later he made a terrible decision on a vendor for our work. That one job could have paid the payroll for the yr for everyone. I called the vendor and begged them to give us the job back on the speaker phone in the bosses office. He said the same thing. He didn't need to be reminded he owned the factory. Not only did the vendor pull that job but he pulled all of their parts from our factory. I left on notice 60 days later. Some folks who are overbearing being a boss are not true bosses. Some are not people persons and go about it the wrong way. That last statement was so true when a local magistrate spoke with me in private the last day of his job. He reminded me that I would have made a great magistrate because I am fair. From a suggestion of that position I turned down. But what an honor to be asked. Get along folks with people bridges are hard to replace if you burn them. Great post to the OP

One constant is that life changes from day to day . Generally speaking it is safer to leave a job on good terms than it is to burn your bridges down . That change I spoke of ? ... you might need to make a strategic retreat one day .Hard to do over a deep river with no bridges. Moma always said " if you can't say anything good about a person just don't say anything " good advice 55 years ago, good now

He is a wise man. A real boss never ever..Management 101... corrects an employee in front of other employees or belittles anyone in front of others. Or ever shows their authority . Their subordinates already know they are in charge. This was stressed many times in the management courses .

Much better to govern out of respect rather than fear.

The plant manager on my first real job said that he didn't want people to work for him. He wanted people to work WITH him.

The worst “leader” I ever had worked for me until I pushed her out. We will call her “Betty”.

She was a horrible leader and generally manipulative person. My time working for her was just over a year, and she made a point to make sure every day was miserable.

I worked for her in Dallas, and fast-fwd about 7 years I am in Orlando and get promoted and now I own (both sides) of the kingdom.

Well, I was asked to set up “skip level meetings and round table lunches” as part of my new gig.

Sure enough, my first trip to Dallas, I make certain she is a required attendee on my lunch meeting list.

She shows up to lunch all cheery and telling me how happy she is for me, etc. etc.

I look her straight in the eye and say “Thank you, but I don’t think we’ve ever actually met before.”

She explains she is certain that I used to work for her and I continue to look her square in the eye and politely disagree.

You want to make someone feel irrelevant, act like you have no clue who they are.

Fast forward once again, Oh, sorry, budgets are really tight, but I have an opportunity for a non-manager (engineer) in Saudi Arabia if you are interested….

Oh, you are leaving the company?

Well thank you for your service…

After working for the owner, then the next step up the ladder is owning your own business. At 37 that was accomplished with two businesses.
