Congratulations to Sass, but Dallas Seavy was giving him a run, even though he was down to seven dogs.
1 hour 12 min 08 second split is pretty close race.
Wonder who will get the Red Lantern this year?

Red Lantern this year? Hope they take a little longer, that’s the day I take my outdoor Christmas lights down.
Those dogs aren't Huskys. What's the deal with that? Eska wants to know.
congrats to a hard race won
Pretty Siberian Tom.
The Iditarod speed record is eight days, three hours and 40:13 minutes, set by Mitch Seavey in 2013. Mitch who is Dallas's father is also the oldest man to win the race at 57 years old in 2017.
They stopped using Malemutes and then Siberian Huskies then generic huskies when the race switched from "endurance" oriented to "speed" oriented. The classic sled dogs could survive where the mushers couldn't, and they could wait out a storm if need be. Finishing times were 14 or 15 days. Speeds like nowadays would kill a Malemute from overheating.
Karen Ramstead might still be driving her team of classic Siberian Huskies ... far and away the prettiest team on the planet.
Thanks for the info. I don't know much about the race. Neither does Eska.
But she'll lay flopped over on the porch in the snow like a hound in the summer sun.
And thanks wolfpack. She's my buddy. Technically my son's dog.
I like the name Eska, and those ghost eyes. Gorgeous!
Eska is almost like the Aleut word for "where the ocean power breaks on the rocks" Alaxsxa.
Eska was an Inuit word for river, according to the interwebs.
Bit like getting an oriental word as a tattoo, isn't it?
But it seemed kinda different and we liked it.
Her eyes were bright blue when we got her, then changed over soon to that predatory gray.
I probably wouldn't have chosen a Husky, but my son had to have one. She has the biggest personality I've ever seen in a dog, for better and worse. She's by far the smartest dog I've ever had.
Just curious...did any dogs die during this event?
David, I don’t think any this year. When they do peta is usually all over it like someone shot a president.

Smart dog? Oh heck yeah. She’ll save your life in a snowstorm if you give her half a chance. Many’s the story of mushers getting out on the pressure ridges in pack ice and getting turned around. The dogs KNOW which way to go.
Apayauq Reitan of Kaktovik has won the Red Lantern award, as the last musher to finish the Iditarod this year.
Reitan finished with seven dogs in 13 days, 8 hours, 39 minutes, and 13 seconds.
