Did not know this:
During the 1943 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles temporarily merged into the “Steagles” as a result of player shortages stemming from both teams losing players to World War II military service. ... 😉
It's being willing. I found out early that most men, regardless of cause or need, aren't willing. They blink an eye or draw a breath before they pull the trigger. I won't. ~ J.B. Books

Didn't know this either. At least the football circuit back then didn't replace the players with lady's like baseball teams did. I learned this from that old Tom Hanks\Gena Davis movie "A League Of Their Own" which I actually enjoyed.
"There's no crying in Baseball" ! ... 🤣
I'd be awfully embarrassed to be playing football while most other guys were overseas fighting the war.
Only about 10% or so served in the military during WW2. Which is a huge number.
I think many of the Americans who were not in the military were farming, manufacturing supporting US infrastructure. Which is a much larger percentage of the population.
It’s not like today where the pro athletes made millions. All those guys likely had jobs outside of football.
