Every day I get about 5 phone calls that when I answer the line is dead or I hear a click. Where are these calls originating, I cant track them?

Do you have Prince Albert in a can?
If you are on a cell and not a landline, block the number.
yep. Spam, scams, and your car warranty is about to expire.
Usually the dead line or click when you answer is letting the caller (human or computer) know that your number is an active number. Your number then goes on a list that is sold to spammers.
Same thing with e-mails. Don't even open the junk, spam e-mails. Just delete.
The answering part is an interesting point, never even thought about doing it that way.
Just got one on our landline.
If you answer and hear nothing (or maybe an old "fax" noise) for a few seconds, you can bet that it's a robo-call from a call center. It may take a few seconds for the actual human to see the "There's a live one!" light and pick up at his/her/its end.
That's why I give three seconds from the time I say "The Raabs" and if there's nothing there, I hang up.
If there's an actual human there, I immediately ask them what number they're calling from. If they can't give me the match to what my Caller ID says, then I know they've spoofed the number. And the ONLY reason to spoof a number is if the caller is a crook.
I use a CPR CallBlocker device on my landline. It comes with 5,000 known scammer numbers already blocked, and lets me block 5,000 more. Just hit the Big Red Button and they're blocked forever. I enjoy hitting that button.
TIL people still answer unknown callers.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
I have started answering them, and when a live person comes on, I say, "Sheriff's Department, how may I direct your call?" Usually get a CLICK!
I've asked them for their name and then ask them to spell it out. I advise them this call may be recorded and monitored. I ask them if they understand, then ask them to spell their answer,,,,you get the idea.
TIL what TIL means.
So...how do you know the caller is unknown to you? Do you have the phones numbers of every single person you've ever known memorized?
No message on answering machine...Block
Often our caller I.D. will give the name of a city in some other state instead of a persons name. That is a giveaway that it isn't legit. A few months back our spam calls dropped off to just a couple a week but they are back up to 6-8 per day again. Bob
I get three to five calls a day from Medicare. I tell them I am dead and they call back.
If a woman spammer calls let her talk and then ask her if she wearing any panties. 😀 Of course I personally wouldn't do that but maybe one of you heathens will. 😀
If I'm in the right mood and it's a male caller, I shout, "What are you doing with my wife's phone?", and proceed to rant until he hangs up on me. Usually not long.
Is your refrigerator running?
(had to for toad67)
Our phone system has caller ID, blocking capabilities, and an answering machine. We used to get 20-30 calls a day right after we signed up with hughes net. I am positive they sold our number to every thief in America and India. We can block 100 calls before we run out of data space, so I have to dump the numbers about twice a year and start over.
We got to the point that we don't even answer the phone, we just wait for them to start talking, and either answer it (if we know them) or block them.
