Migrants playing checkers (with bottle caps), on a juke joint porch after a freeze out of vegetable crops. Near Okeechobee, Florida.
It's being willing. I found out early that most men, regardless of cause or need, aren't willing. They blink an eye or draw a breath before they pull the trigger. I won't. ~ J.B. Books

Where's all their cell phones? π Bob
I thought the same thing, Bob! Those poor fellas had to actually talk with each other!
You don't see no fat bellies on those fellas. You don't work, you don't eat.
along with nice clothes shoes and I am sure they were all hungry had no idea where they were going to get there next meal or warm bed to sleep in
eating has a big part of motivation when it comes to working
we lost all that and more with the welfare system
Must be the Landowner on the left....aka Boss Man .good clothes.
Yes, and IMO that's a big part of what's wrong with this world, or at least this country. Today the living is so easy that people do not need to spend most of the day drumming up enough food for the day. This leaves people way too much time on their hands to mettle in other people's/states,countries affairs.
That looks like a young "shoeless Joe Jackson" watching all the action! (I know, a bit too late in time"
Shoes were a luxury for children during those depression years. Hand-me-downs all too common and kids were considered lucky even to have those!
That part of no shoes carried on a long time even as a kid I would get one pair at school start and they had to last until the next school year . I also remember wearing shoes too big for me for many years as every pair was bought at least one size larger too grow into lol
But still better than some of my southern cousins I don't remember any of the kids wearing shoes when we visited I'm sure they had a pair for school or winter but saved them by going barefoot asmuch as possible
