Buyer scam?

Buyer used "buy it now" option, selected check as the payment option (my mistake for even enabling it because I don't want to deal with checks) and then messaged me asking for a phone call to pay with a card over the phone.
I called, wrong number.
Should I go through with this transaction or cancel it and relist to avoid some kind of scam/chargeback setup?

I don't know what you are selling, but if the bidder pays for the item, AND THE CHECK CLEARS, then I don't see a problem. I just had a goofball buy a shotgun then ask to pay with a credit card, then a check, then a credit card. This was all in a space of fifteen minutes at 9:30 pm. The next day he cancelled the order, saying he did not want the gun. The day after that he wanted the gun again. I told him no way, relisted the gun and sold it a day later. Oh, and I blocked the guy.
Why in the world would you cancel the auction? You have the merchandise, take the check and hold shipping until the check clears. Or let him pay you with a card over the phone. Where's the danger from that on your part? Bottom line though is you enabled checks as an option to pay, so take the check or get a well deserved F feedback. I don't understand about your statement "I called, wrong number" Does that mean you called a wrong number, or the number he gave you is someone else's number? Call the number listed in his Gunbroker account. What form of payment do you actually like?
So taking cards over the phone hasn't been an issue for you? I'm just concerned about the chargeback potential if I can ever actually get in contact with the guy.
I never wrote a single word about credit cards over the phone.
The few things I have sold on GB, I will gladly take a check. In fact that's my preferred form of payment. You deposit the check, then hold shipping until check clears, then send merchandise. Win win, now you have effectively been paid in cash. No danger of a chargeback. I do not understand sellers lack of desire to take checks.
If he gave you the wrong number to contact him and never sends a check then after a couple of weeks I would relist and give him an F as a non paying bidder. It is the bidders responsibility to make sure you are paid in a reasonable period of time. Bob
I think you guys misunderstand, he selected check as the payment option then emailed me to do it via credit card over the phone.
I'm not saying I'm unwilling to accept a check if he'd actually given me one, I'm saying it just seems like it could be a chargeback scam.
If the phone # doesn't work (for what ever reason,) then email him back.
Yep, and tell him to send a check, and tell him why.
Chargebacks aren't as easy as that....you have tracking numbers showing it shipped and if its a gun you will have the transfer FFL to back up the proof that he got the item. They don't just award the money back to people without it being something they can prove was warranted. I have no clue what you are selling, what type credit card system you are using, but we have a few times a week where people pay over the phone and its never been any kind of fraud. I've had a few morons here and there....but thats a totally different story.
