Well, I started taking Taijutsu

Actually, I started about a month ago. I felt I needed to expand on my hand to hand combat skills. It's been fun to learn this martial art. There are 9 schools in the bukjinkan budo taijutsu and so much to learn! It even includes modern weapons training... guns!

Krav Maga.............practical killing
Wax on, wax off.
Taijutsu? Had to look that one up, never heard of it before.
That is why when a gun is pulled, you have to BACK up and create space. Never know what kind of hand to hand training people have. When out of reach, my CCW will win every time!
I love when people in the movies(I know it's fake) walk up to someone with gun in hand, only to have it taken!
G. Gordon Liddy used to say, "Flee a knife, attack a gun."
congrats on the new endeavor
I had a boss some time ago that had practiced several forms of such self defense . I do not remember all the styles and types since he was a kid and was very good at it, when I last worked with him he had been training for a year or two with the swords ( Japanese ) and was doing well at it .
Yes, we have already worked with swords some. It's been so much fun and almost overwhelming all there is to learn in this system.

Or..............just my opinion...........when someone pulls a gun on you at close range............you charge and pull them toward you and gain control.
What's a good discipline for a 65 yr old dude with 2 bad knees and an arthritic hip??
I'm thinking maybe a higher capacity ccw?
Possibly tai chi?

I’m no expert but this should be about all you need to know.
Segal is a big ugly wanta be. He is supposed to be an Akido master but will never spar with anyone. He should move to Russia and hang out with his buddy Putin.
That was a bunch of theatrical BS..........count how many times he had his back turned to the second attacker while holding a wrist lock on the first. In the real world.........the second guy would have just walked up to 'ol Steve while he had Steve's back and poked him about 75 times with a "Seagal sticker".........or just shot him........or hit him with a shovel or a crowbar.
And none of those idiots would be wearing keikogi in real life.
I guess that's a cool video for guys who like watching a fat old movie star doing demonstration katas
Like Ricci.Wright....................Steve Seagal does not impress me
Aikido is similar in many respects to taijutsu. From what I have learned so far, it's like a kinder gentler version. Anyone familiar with the moves though knows that it's not a simple wrist or joint lock and then letting the opponent go to attack again. Sure that can get your attacker to submit, but if done aggressively (and correctly) you easily break the limbs of the person attacking. It's easy to criticize the Segal vid based on a perception that he's just just got a wrist lock and lets go and the guy is no worse for the wear. The very easily demonstrable point is he has manipulated his opponents into a position where he can then strike, break, maim or even easily kill the opponent. Segal is a piece of trash (and that demo was just a theatrical show) but his art is not.

I took about 20 aikido lessons in Atlanta. I lived 2 hours away, so it was difficult to make the drive. At that time, I was a full time student in a Japanese karate dojo in my little town. Jap karate is a brutal martial art, you punch the opponent in the ribs, break 2 ribs. Punch again in the same spot, and drive the broken ribs into the lungs to cause a collapsed lung. We didn't actually break ribs in school but we practiced how to do it.
Aikido is the opposite. No punches or kicks. I was 6-3 and 210, the little Sensei would get me to attack him, and try to punch him in the face. The next thing I knew, I was laying on my back and the little Jap had me in a wrist lock. And I said "Sensei that wrist lock hurts, would you please let go." Actually, you don't say the words, you slap your thigh twice, with your other hand, and he will let you go.
Aikido is a difficult art to learn. Seagal took Aikido for 6 years in Japan and he was quite good at it.
My opinion which means nothing to anyone except me, is that Akido would work well against drunks being escorted out by a bouncer or restraining someone who you don't want to hurt. It has been taught to cops for a while. It certainly has a place in self-defense. I do not think it would work well against someone with training in other more violent forms of martial arts. There was an Akido class that met on Monday nights in the gym I used, and I was invited to "sit in" on a class. The instructor worked with me and demonstrated various holds and while we were working at slow speed, not real-world stuff, I thought it would not work with me. Grabbing a person's wrist still leaves a hand and two feet and a lot of defensive moves available to counter, and a trained opponent isn't going to allow his wrist to be grabbed without retaliating. Akido could certainly be a valid part of one's training and to find a good gym with a good instructor and good classmates is well worth the time. Playing with swords sounds like fun!! I have never done that.
That demo with Seagal is still BS........two simultaneous attackers would annihilate him if only one, let alone both, were armed.
Remember this?

Exactly!!!
I meant....IF I pull a gun, first thing is to step back and create space. A trained person can and will take a gun from you if you are too close.
I think we are in agreement, just didn't quite connect on our thoughts!
My youngest son did the Combat Hapkiddo thing for a few years. That's some pretty tough stuff. He used me for his dummy to practice on a few times and I said the hell with that. That crap hurts. Anyway he carries a gun so it was some good exercise for him regardless if he ever needed to use it.
I guess that stuff is good to know if you ever get attacked while wearing a bathrobe! Don
When you are young you feel invincible and want to learn all of that stuff. I went thru the same with boxing. Was doing well till I broke my hand in a kmart parking lot defending myself. The large man who hit me and hurt me was in the same room with the curtain pulled. I broke his jaw, ribs. I was a light welterweight 138 and he was 230/250 or so. I didn't press charges with the Police there. My coach Tom Sarge Johnson later died in a plane crash with the US Olympic team in Poland March 1980. I threw in the towel and walked away from all of it afterwards. I can only thank that the issue happened in the parking lot. My right hand broken bone healed and I moved on.
do your katas............you will be invincible
wear your gi to walmart
I HATE GI's. The one I own is dark blue, weights a ton, and is hot as hell. The only time I ever wore it is when I was required to for a test.
Had Aikido for physical management training for 21 of the 28 years I worked in corrections. At one of the annual skill outs at the training branch the head Aikido Master I think pick me out because I was one of the biggest people there, to attack him. He did not realize how strong an ole country boy was apparently. He grabbed me by the arm and I did not move. He left me alone.
The most important thing in any self defense is keep your center, proper distance and use the other person against them self.
I hate kata. Forty minutes of kata every session is the reason I left Japanese karate. No kata in aikido, thank God.
Yeah and when you're not in your bathrobe you do it this way. Some of those boys in "bathrobes" like my boys when they were kids were already tough as nails to start with. You ad a little more know how to it like in the Golden Gloves and they were hell on wheels. That was two boys, the one above in the photo and this one in the ring and carrying the tournament trophy, that were never bullied in their lives and they never disrespected anyone else either.
Mine is a heavy canvas black. It's warm but our dojo is very cool.😎
