Can you spare a prayer for my dog? Final Update...
Neoblackdog, while I'm sorry for the diagnosis, I'm glad you and Thor have options. Don't envy you your choices, but sure you'll make a good one. Prayers will continue for God's blessing on your friend.
we have in the past went thru similar . as for us no judgement on which direction or suggestions every case if different I am sure your family will pick the best one for all of you
All best wishes and prayers for Thor and his family.
George
It's being willing. I found out early that most men, regardless of cause or need, aren't willing. They blink an eye or draw a breath before they pull the trigger. I won't. ~ J.B. Books
Thanks again for all the well wishes and prayers. Today is the day we will make the 'big' decision as we want to be able to call the vet tomorrow and get the ball rolling. We're leaning towards the 'limb saving' surgery as this was caught very early and will give him the most opportunity for a relatively normal outcome.
Well, tomorrow's the big day. Thor's CT scan looked good (no cancer in the lungs/organs) so he goes in for surgery at 9AM. They're going to remove the affected bone and replace it with a metal rod and add some 'bone growing' hormone to help things fill in. After that he'll be getting 4 treatments of chemotherapy over the next month or two. The wrist will be fused but he should be able to eventually get almost full use out of the leg again.
It is a mistake to put the dog through all that chemo. only 2 years of life and much of that would be suffering. Amputate the leg and let him be a 3 legged dog.
I include all animals in mt prayers, everyday. Thor has been my prayers for the past five days. I have been
surround by dogs my entire life and I know exactly what you feel now.
All best wishes for Thor and his family.

Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Just heard from the doc and he said the surgery went about as perfect as can be expected. Whew! We'll pick him up tomorrow and start the healing.
Allen, amputation was one of the things we considered but even with that they highly recommend the chemo. We discussed this all with three vets ad nauseum and all three that we talked with assured us that dogs, for whatever reason, tolerate the chemo much better than humans. The long term outlook for the limb sparing surgery and amputation were the same so we went with saving the limb.
I want to thank all of you for the prayers and well wishes. I know there were more prayers said than folks that responded and we appreciate each and every one of you.

We just got back from the vet's office. We had to send Thor on to the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. Things were going pretty well but then one complication after another set in. We know we'll see him again but right now I'm a hurtin' unit.
Just be aware that many dogs can live perfectly happy lives on three limbs. They are incredibly adaptive........kinda like humans. Good luck with your decision and prayers for whichever way you go.
Prayers for Thor and his family. Truly sorry for what you're feeling. We've gone through it too many times. There's always another that needs rescuing though, and we've never been sorry we did.
Exactly , had to have an eye removed and sewn shut on my last lab Dixie. She adjusted fine.. I would sneak up on her blind side and grab her and say coyote... and she would jump.. all in fun.

Hard choices indeed, do what your heart tells you to do and you can't be wrong.
Two years is twenty four months of precious time to spend with Thor.

Awesome news.
Sounds like the docs have everything well in hand but I'll still say a few prayers for a positive outcome. Bob
I read somewhere that dogs don't like to be hugged. That might be true for most dogs, but I'm giving my dogs a hug tonight for Thor.
Good news is nice to hear. Thanx!

Sorry for your loss
Oh man I'm sorry for your loss
Sorry to hear that Steve.
You are a very great owner to take care of an animal like you are doing. To go thru the agony is very hard. Prayers for both of you
I'm sorry to hear that.
Dang it Steve, my condolences.

Wow, that's some sad news. Prayers for you folks from here.
I know your hurt, leaves a pretty big hole in your heart.
God bless him and you too Steve
