Beef tongues and split pea soup this weekend.

yoshmysteryoshmyster Member Posts: 22,051 ✭✭✭✭

The Mexican supermarket is having a sale on beef tongues for $7.99 a pop. We'll see if they have any left when I get there. Not sure if I'll make anything with it this weekend or freeze it for later.

While looking in the freezer I came across a few ham bones so I'll be making split pea soup. That's going to be fun and free up realestate in the freezer. I may deep fry the ham skin to make crackling's. Smoked ham skins made in to cracklings are great, but I don't know if I have enough to make the mess worth it.

your welcome to my share there Ok and nothing wrong I would consider eating them

my back story I ate a beef tongue once while in Japan they brought out a small grill and then vegetables . chicken strips of beef and so on ( I was there with some Japanese counterparts from work it was a thing the company did with groups of us to see our counterpart in Japan at work great time ) any way

next up was beef tongue I was not so eager, but I gave it a try not great but was ok , last up I tossed out the white flag they brought out a platter of intestine casings for us to grill .. I had to pass . my host ask why you eat sausage and hot dogs < smae, same I said yes but I just can't get past the looks of just a pile of empty guts

also tried a lot of Japanese food while I was there for 6 weeks one I remember well was pizza with fish and squid and assorted sea products was another that I ate but never gained a tase for 😐️

We had a couple very lean years when I was growing up, and beef tongue at $.25 a pound made the menu all too frequently.

Have at it, and hope you enjoy it.

The only way I have ever had beef tongue was pickled, and it was delicious!

I wouldn't mind trying it fixed differently. Beef is beef after all. 😁

Growing up on a farm there was nothing wasted when a hog or beef was butchered the tongue was definitely one of the better things

I guess I am an honorary Hispanic since I have been married to two Latinas and I am a fluent Spanish speaker. Been all over Latin America.

    My favorite is tongue tacos.

Indeed it does. And any of you can sample tongue for about a buck at your local taqueria. Just ask for a lengua.

    True story.

Gentleman I know had a visitor to spend the night. His wife fixed beef tongue for supper, gentleman said he did not eat anything the came from an animals mouth. Hey mom "fix this fine man" a couple fried eggs.

It turned out to be $7.99 a pound (yep a typo) so no beef tongue. I could have argues bait and switch but I didn't want to be known as that crazy Japo. Since they already know me as a that big Japo. Crazy Big Japo might be too much.

So the pea soup was okay. The peas didn't come out nice. It was still kind a chalky. So I had to move it through the blender. Which made me want an immersion blender. It'll be one of those once in a year kind a tool, maybe.

I can at least say I lived on $100 (and still got $15 left) for two weeks. So I reckon I could live on a budget.

It is true that you can create a demand for something simply by pricing it exorbitantly. ("It must be terrific; it's so expensive!")

Tongue, cheeks, and more - even ribs - were once considered "trim" and were either thrown away or sold to pet food companies for pennies. Today, they're premium cuts in as much demand as steak.
