Anyone have any trick for keeping deer out of your yard? Any scents that they particularly hate?
They're eating a lot of expensive landscaping.

i really dont think there is anything. some things work somewhat but i havent found anything that has worked reliably in the last 30 years. maybe a couple of beagles if you could ever get them back after chasing the deer away.
My dad did battle with them every year he tried about everything including the human hair and even putting the dog out by the garden eventually they got where they just ignored each other. Only thing that worked was putting a high fence around the garden
Not sure how big an area you wanna protect. BUT for my garden(1/4 acre) 2 stands of fishing line absolutely works! Use 20lb line, one strand about a foot off the ground with the 2nd about 3.5-4 foot off the ground. Do NOT put flags or markers on it.
The deer cannot see it. They walk into it and it scares them. They will hit the low one if walking with head down, or high ine if walking with head up.
They will break it soon after you out it up, because it startles them and they run. Just tie it back together. They learn to stay away because their fear overrides their hunger.
I have setup on my garden now(and past gardens for 5 years). 18 acres surrounded by woods and LOADS of deer. No neighbors in sight, so the deer are plentyfull and it still keeps them out.
I know it sounds like BS, but I assure you that it works. For $10 worth of fishing line and some corner posts.....you cant go wrong! Make sure to pull the line fairly tight so it is stiff but still has some flex if pushed on.
Sounds genius to me. Never heard of it before tho. May have to try it.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Give it a try! Had an old man tell me that several years ago. I figured it was old man BS, but the deer were killing my garden. Figured no harm in trying. Viola, it worked! Been doing it ever since!
I believe i asked a similar question last year and I was gonna try mikes idea, but my garden was small enough that JI just used some old hog fencing and t-post I already had and it has kept the deer and bunnies out of mine, grasshoppers not so much...
If you can put up two fences about 3 ft apart or even two fences of the fishin line mike mentioned.
Deer to not normally try to jump over two fences that are within few feet of each other. I noticed this where sometimes in the woods a place would get fenced by installing a new fence within few feet of the old fence and deer would walk for long ways to find a corner or where a tree had fell over both fences or where one fence was down so as to jump over only one fence.
I've also heard of using a solar panel battery operated varmit repeller that has a small red light that looks like a red eye when it's detects movement AT NIGHT to a animal. Think maybe Amazon may sell such.
That is a good one with the fishing line. Never heard of it but it makes sense.
Fishing line or any small twine works, two lines will do the trick.
I use deer off liquid on ornamental and flowers but need to reapply after a couple good rains.
I take a wizz around the garden from time to time🙃....it seems to keep them out of my bride's flowers.........
I live out in the sticks....not a good idea if you live in town !
My bride has a little solar powered light in the middle of her garden. Just a little frosted globe shaped light with fairly low output. The deer seem to avoid that garden.
30.06 works real well
You might also consider one of those motion sensor sprinklers.
I live in an upscale neighborhood on 6/10 of an acre so any kind of farm type fencing and shooting are not possible although I wouldn't shoot them anyway.
The deer here are not afraid of lights, noise or people and are only mildly concerned with dogs. The deer roam the neighborhood (sometimes during the day as well) and one even beds down in my back yard during the day on occasion.
I really like them around but I've lost way too many rare and expensive exotic plants to the little buggers.
Fishing line is safe for city use.😁 I lived in the "city"(small dot on the map)for a while, and the line kept em out of my garden.
Try hanging your tree stand, every time I put mine up the deer disappear.
Would be a good time to practice yer cowboy skills ,,,,,,, rope’em by the hind legs, drag’em to the fire and brand’em. BS would be a good brand for ya. They won’t be back !! ,,,,, 🤣
your solution is a bow.
Down here on the south side of Asheville is a town called Biltmore Forest. For the rich folks, $3 million houses on 4 acre lots. Heavily wooded, big expensive flower gardens at every mansion. Movie stars, doctors, and lawyers live there. The place is crawling with deer. There were 32 deer/car accidents in one year there in the little town. Even worse, deer were eating all the rhodedendrons!
Several years ago the town fathers hired an outfit out of Vermont, named White Buffalo, to come down and shoot about 50 deer, and especially does. They filed with the state DNR and got a waiver on hunting laws. Some of the homeowners agreed to dump piles of corn in their yard and the deer would be shot there.
But, a local animal rights gal who lived in Biltmore Forest got her husband, a lawyer, to file a federal lawsuit to stop the shooting. The White Buffalo guys had driven down from Yankeeland, the shooting was to start the next day. The lawsuit succeeded and the hunt was stopped. White Buffalo guys packed up and went back up north.
My dad has had some success with a product called deer b gon.
I personally have never used it, so speaking from second hand knowledge. I do remember him stating that you don't want it on your person, as it stinks pretty bad.
I put small bags of milorganite around young pecan trees to keep the deer from eating them. Ift works so mabe you could put some on poles around your garden. Don
That would probably work ................ 😁
I haven't heard of that stuff before, where do you get it?
A blaze orange vest, hat and a 30.06 seem to work as well.

Lowes or Home Depot sell it. Don
