First picture is me and the Captain of the Destroyer I was on.
This picture is of me (on the right) and my best friend Danny in Gitmo. (quite drunk).
This is somewhere in the Red Sea.
and this one is me and Danny at the Key West Naval base in 1967. I had just gotten out of the navy a few months before and I drove from Daytona to Key West in my 1966 GTO to meet up with my buddies that were still shipboard.

Looks like good days.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
What did you do on the ship?
Quartermaster and Boatswains Mate
Didnt know they made film that long ago!
They didn't, those pictures were painted ..................................... pretty realistic, huh?
🙂🙂
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
So cool!
What destroyer were you on?
I on the USS Conyngham DDG-17. We were part lead ship for the destroyer squadron so we had the Commander of the Squadron.
My memory of being in Gitmo was getting to the NCO club before the Marines.
We hightailed to the NCO club. The Marines were on a Amphib across the pier. They made the Marines do a 5k run before liberty started.
I do remember we were drunk before the Marines got to the NCO club.
We were doing bombing practice off the coast of PR when we pulled into Gitmo.
66 GTO for grad from HS. 4sp, 389cu in 335HP. Bought NEW. Sticker price was $3192 from Superior Motors, Orangeburg, SC
I was on the USS Lloyd Thomas DD 764. She was decommissioned in Pearl Harbor and sold to the Taiwan navy in 1972 and renamed the Dang Yang.
In 2006 She was sunk to serve as an artificial reef.
Mine was also a 398, four speed with tri-carbs, Positraction etc,
Mine was right at $3500 out the door ............................ probably worth $50,000 today
My first car.....brand new.....a 68 GTO that was red, of course!
Dang.......I wish I had it back.
Looks like you were stationed in Newport. I was in Norfolk but don't see any deployments with DD764 and DDG-17 being together.
Yes Sir, Newport it was. No we never deployed with DDG-17 while I was aboard.
We were in Newport and then got sent to Norfolk. However we did not spent much time there are we were deployed constantly.
We also went to Norfolk for a short while. We did two tours through the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, S. China Sea, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Turkey, Malta, Sicily, Crete, Greece, Africa, Seychelles Islands, Spain, Italy, France, Pakistan, Ethiopia, etc. And four times through the Suez Canal.
The world still liked us back then, only had a couple of trouble spots (middle east). When we were in Aden Saudi Arabia, they tried to blow up our ship but was caught in time and prevented. it was in the exact location and same tactics used to bomb the USS Cole in 2000.
The Lloyd Thomas was outfitted for ASW (anti submarine warfare) so we spent a lot of time in the North Atlantic (the most inhospitable body of water on the planet), 50 foot swells were not uncommon.
