Do you remember a light bulb in your Mother's sewing box? Do you remember what it was for?

There was a time when women "darned" socks. This was to repair the holes worn in the socks. Holes in your socks were very common back in the 50's and before. The light bulb would be inserted inside the sock giving a round surface to repair the hole with sewing thread.
There are many things about the past, in the 50's and 40's that were so much better than the way things are today.
There are a whole lot of things today that are WAY better than the way things used to be. Todays socks for example.

I'll be darned. Well not really I hope, but,,,,,,
my mother was an excellent seamstress making a lot of the cloths for my sister and myself. i learned a little about sewing from her. this helped a lot in my early military career with sewing stripes, nametags and patches on uniforms. i never had the extra money to have that done professionally. whats funny now is my grandchildren will bring me their stuffed toys to repair because "Papa knows how to fix it."
I'm not sure where it is, but we have a wooden darning egg. And yes, it was still used when I was young.
Light bulb? Mom sewed by the light of a coal oil lamp.
my mom never had one but I remember her patching up our clothes and of course socks . just a way of life
I was embarresed to wear patched up clothes to school then some time after I left school the "in thing " was torn up ripped up patched up clothes done on purpose even sold they way still today .. go figure 😲
my wife came as I was reading this post , I ask her she knew right off why and what it was used for . but she has always like to sew when she had the time .
will add in . just call me cheap I know I have packages of socks I have not even opened but here on the "computer catch all desk " 😁 I have a drawer with a few needles and thread in a container among the assorted repair supply's I still sew up my socks and patch holes in my back yard work clothes I guess just from old habits I dont need to do it any more and I need to get over it , and just start tossing items away ( my wife and kids make fun of me over it .
but the way the country is headed , such things might not be a bad thing to know how to do
Have a child's plastic easter egg in my sewing box . I darn my work and hunting socks if needed
Darn it, I wondered what that was for!
There was a bulb in her sewing box, but it was a replacement bulb for her sewing machine.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Talk about proof about who was raised poor!! My Mom used a burned out light bulb to darn our socks! We didn't have the money for one of them fancy plastic darning eggs!! 😁
mom allways just stuffed wadded up newspapers in the socks then sewed them, paper would pull right out of the threaded repair.........
How about an alabaster egg
I still sew up my ripped clothing rather than throw it out..........I am pretty cheap.
Ya, I put the light bulb in the sock but had a heck of a time running it through the sewing machine.....
I found one of those once and put it in my tackle box. 😁 I just figured that a BIG bobber would net me a BIG fish!
How about a Dinosaur egg.
