Why are so many people using the @ symbol in front of a user's name recently? Is it just the cool new trend, or is there more to it?

It's the new thing all the kids are doing! Basically it sends a notification to the person saying they were mentioned.
It may be their pre pro noun.
I figured they wanted to know where they were. AT...
So they will get something in their message inbox?
It will show a notification on the top right of the screen where the bell icon is. If you click it it will tell you who mentioned you in whatever topic.
It also starts a search so you don't have to type out their whole handle or know correct spelling... or you can copy their handle from one of their posts, usually more than one way to accomplish things... ie: @toad67 or toad67, with the @ I only had to type "@t" to then select you from the list, Without it I had to scroll up to your comment then copy n paste it...
Todd, thanks for asking that question because I wondered too but did not care enough to ask.
Phooey on all this newfangled stuff....
Many times for me, it eliminates having to type out a PM message also. Just @ in the thread and they get notice.

@everyone
I thought the green print was discontinued, apparently I thought wrong as usual 🙄

Green font is used by the system when you do things like use the "@" symbol, but not available for general font changes...
The site Host/Engineers used all the green. Not available for user text.
Notice every ones name is green
'Home - General Discussion' at top and bottom of page are green
Hover over a thread title- it turns green
Do a quote in your comment- the web link is green
Well, I think the hosts/engineers need to provide us a sarcasm font color. Or maybe we as a collective can designate one of the emojis as a sarcasm precursor? Who is with me?
/s Is usually used for sarcasm.
Maybe they are green with envy?
