I am sick of hearing about it. I say lets just give every Black person, person claiming to be black or that trans-raced into being black about a million dollars, no $10,000,000.00 tax free.

When the hair weaves, crack by the kilo, new Rolls Royce's, Cadillac's, $1,000.00 tennis shoes, gold chains and teeth get bought it will be back to square one.

    Consider the source.

They do kind of have a point despite the fact that many Americans immigrated after slavery ended.

The Southern slave economy was a source of foreign income for the United States.

The nation which the immigrants moved to was partially built with the profits of slave labor.

There are better reasons not to pay out.

The first is that affirmative action helped cause the rust belt and corporate welfare helped stop it from spreading. This means the country is pouring billions every year to help the descendants of freedmen catch up. And we didn't necessarily put them at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder. There's a chance Africa sold us condemned criminals to recoup their own losses. I don't know it for a fact but it needs to be vetted before money is paid out. There may be records.

If that were so, then they are owed a lot less because their ancestors didn't lose generational wealth when they were sold into slavery. And, the extra cost of pulling them up by making employers hire them then covering the costs of lower production and higher crime can be taken out of their reparations.

The other reason is that free Africans had every reason to want to be here. Part or all of the underground railroad may have been a front for illegal immigration. Africans could have come here in large numbers after the Civil war to replace the freedmen while they were still disorganized and uneducated due to slavery. The people who were most likely to have come were the former slave traders because they lost their gig with the end of the Civil war and the voluntary ending of slavery in Brazil. The US may have banned the importation of slaves in 1807 but smuggling went on at least until 1859.

I think it is a great idea... with 2 stipulation... that the recipient show proof they are a descendant and give a Social Security number to receive the 25k dollars. Not an issue giving that money. Then in 1 yr when they don't file their tax return for this being income they will be prosecuted. And lose their section 8 free housing vouchers because income was exceeded to live in it. . Win Win for the govt. Less outlay for section 8 free housing and they got what they wanted.

Didn't know we still had slaves.

    Sowell nailed it.

This one conveys my opinion. Can anyone name a successful African country that these folks ancestors might have come from? Are the descendants in this country better off here than they would be in Africa? After all of the money already spent on them, with very poor results, I have think a refund is more appropriate than reparations. Insanity can be defined as doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. Reparations after all of the money already spent falls under that definition. Bob

Before any of these race pimps utter another word perhaps, they should look at the start of the supply chain.

Ok, give them the money with the stipulation they go back to Africa and start a new life. Or if they get the money and stay here, then every person that is a descendent of someone that fought on the side of the Northern states gets reparation. A lot of people died and were wounded, not to mention having their lives disrupted freeing the slaves.

The whole reparation idea is a joke.

Crack is a terrible thing. Just think how they will end up after getting free money.

it ain't going to change, she knows how to hand feed propaganda to her constituents over there in Acre Homes to have a lifetime job. Fan the flames of perceived racism and welfare giveaways is all she knows along with Al Greene.

The City of Houston Texas is losing their Covid handouts and will be having a serious debt crisis coming to the city council soon . Those two leftist Democrats mention above are going to have a hard time keeping their constituents happy very soon.

It is sad day when a group of people have so little confidence in their abilities that they harken back to a long ago wrong and demand assistance from a group that had nothing to do with that wrong.

Pathetic. Maybe some should consider the concept of black pride and what the concept should actually mean.

    From Wikipedia:

"The Irish slaves myth is a pseudohistorical narrative that conflates the penal transportation and indentured servitude of Irish people during the 17th and 18th centuries, with the hereditary chattel slavery experienced by the forbears of the African diaspora. Some white nationalists and others who want to minimize the effects of hereditary chattel slavery on Africans and their descendants, have used this false equivalence to deny racism  against African Americans or claim that African Americans are too vocal in seeking justice for historical grievances.  It also can hide the facts around Irish involvement in the  transatlantic slave trade. The myth has been in circulation since at least the 1990s and has been disseminated in online memes and social media debates. According to historians Jerome S. Handler and Matthew C. Reilly, "it is misleading, if not erroneous, to apply the term 'slave' to Irish and other indentured servants in early Barbados."  In 2016, academics and Irish historians wrote to condemn the myth."

Come to think of it though, some of African enslavement in America might have also been due to penal transportation, only the court systems' records belonged to some long-gone sultanate. Unfortunately, the enslavement went on after the first generation.

  • SoreShoulderSoreShoulder Member Posts: 3,148 ✭✭✭

They didn't make the Colonies/USA buy them and profit from them.

When the Africans first sold the slave traders a slave, it may have at least some of the time been a form of penal transportation, which is way too harsh but not completely baselessly unjust. The slaveowners continued to employ innocent children who were born into slavery before committing any crime.

Plus, we don't have to do as Africa does and it's different morally when you can spare the expenditure.

It was the British who brought the slaves to America because they needed workers..make them pay..why should we..??

The US officially ended the international slave trade in 1807 and the last known slave smuggling ship to the US landed in 1859, definitely on our watch. Besides, the US profited from the foreign trade revenue of slave made goods. So we're living in a country partially built on slave profits.

  • Don McManusDon McManus Member Posts: 23,672 ✭✭✭✭

Partially built on slave labor, partially build on child labor, partially built on people trapped in company towns for generations.

    Where do we stop?

Rhetorical, of course. We either never stop or never start. One path is achievable and one is not.
