Nuclear fusion ,,,,, not Fission

‘Nuclear fusion happens when two or more atoms are fused into one larger one, a process that generates a massive amount of energy as heat. Unlike nuclear fission that powers electricity all over the world, it doesn’t generate long-lived radioactive waste.’

Is there going to be a test? Don
Encouraging news, but another article I read said if this breakthrough is viable, scaling it up for commercial us will take at least a couple of decades. I have been hearing fusion is only 20 years away my whole life, maybe this time they mean it. Bob
And, there is no such thing as nuculer fission or nuculer fusion or nuculer bombs! Even some experts can’t pronounce the word correctly. Drives me nuts!
I like your cowboyin and gunsmithin lessons better
I believe there was a movie about that stuff, with Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue (she got it to work). “The Saint.” Pretty good flick.
Next you’ll wanna know how to fix a prolapse uterus in a sheep with a short necked beer bottle, curved cotton sack needle and braided fishing line. 😉
Wait, What ???
Amazing that any animal can survive after a prolapse...
You’d be surprised how many ladies are subject to a ‘prolapse’ and have a bladder sling installed to minimize pressure on the uterus.
yep just ask some elder ladies and its also a procedure that could cause more harm in the long run ( but every procedure has a risk )
I agree you do a great job on gunsmithing and ranching stories but nuclear any thing is above my pay scale 😁
There's a big difference between a surgical arena prolapse vs. a wild west, in the middle of nowhere event... Just goes to show you how tough they are. It still amazes me that calves can be dropped in -20, or worse weather that just survive.
OK, too much information.
In cow talk, she throwed her une.
😁 I consider myself to be just a horse doctor when it comes to veterinarian medicine!
All this stuff about fusion and fission must be bad for you. It gives me a headache just thinking about it!
I wonder how much power those "about 200 focused power lasers" consume.
They say there is a net energy gain.
I would ask......please define "net energy gain"........EXACTLY!! 🤔
Glenn Beck had a guest that stated this is going to happen for sure. A teaspoon of water and the amount of lithium in a cell phone would supply all the power needs of a person for 10 years. I hope to see this come to fruition. It will shut the greenie-weenies up and give us unlimited power with no waste to worry about. The costs would be nil compared to what we pay today for energy. Cheap energy built America. Almost free energy would be a huge advancement for mankind.
15 years ago I worked at the university of Rochester laser lab. Fusion was just a little ways away for years.
Fusion discussions remind me of a bar I was at in Minnesota. They had a permanent sign in the window that said ‘Free beer tomorrow’.

Actually, Okie, it would make the EV's more practical because there would be a glut of electricity available.
It would also make it far easier to have hydrogen powered internal combustion engines because it will make large scale electrolosis to get the hydrogen much more practical. Lots and lots of upsides to this, if they can make it work. As has been mentioned, short of a miracle, it'll be decades.
I hate computers with fusion
I hate computers with fission
I wanna go fishin!
montanajoe, I've become aware that you seem to hate computers - period 😏
I would think that basic physics understanding of atoms would show that it isn’t possible to just fuse hydrogen and helium atoms together. The enormous pressure needed to fuse the two together isn’t possible except through a nuclear detonation. This is the principle of how a hydrogen bomb works. A fission nuclear bomb encompass’s the lighter material and puts it under the pressure required to fuse them together, and this all happens within a millionth of a second. Only gravity on the scale of the sun is able to hold the material together to where it wouldn’t’ expand violently, and I can’t imagine how you could contain that type of heat that would be generated.
I believe what is happening is that some people are trying to sell a bill of goods in order to get funding for a project that won’t work, and justify their research. A fission nuclear reactor as been proven to work and is more controllable.
After a deeper dive into this experiment, we have a problem. The fusion reaction between a deuterium and a tritium atom results in a helium atom and a single neutron. This, by definition is not a self sustaining reaction, which is necessary. For any efficient harnessing of fusion.
Furthermore, the headline is terribly misleading in that the resultant energy was not close to the total energy input required to charge and trigger the lasers. It was presented as a 50% energy gain, but this is based upon only the net final amount of energy that hit the fuel pellet, ignoring the aforementioned energy required to get to that point.
It is an advance to be sure, but is not a breakthrough that will fill up the Goodyear Blimp anytime soon.
