how many of you all remember the christmas of 1978, we had a regular blizzard here in WV that would have rivalled any from the midwest or even alaska. I was recovering from a broken leg from a motorcycle accident, hit a car head on and had a cast from foot to my hip. couldn't find any crutches with snow tread on em so I was stuck in the house for a few days. can't really remember how much of the east coast it affected............

    Lol

Here in Ohio where i lived the national guard came in with helicopters .brought in large trucks and bucket loaders trying to get roads passable and get supply to the people living in the surrounding area

I was hobling on one leg a few months earlier

A friend came up behind me gave me huge shove , sad part I I was on a skate board

Turned my foot backwards and my ankle into a 360 swivel joint

I was in a cast and not allowed to walk or put any weight on it for 18 weeks and yes it sucked

Another buddy had just a few weeks before the storm had bought a brand new blazer

all liftedbig tires fancy paint and interior one the factory had sent to the conversion shop that did vans for them

We were out in the weather got stuck so many times twice snow plows pulled us free snow was drifted higher than the top of the blazer

A lot of stories that night but will save for later on

Young and dumb was truly at its peak back then

Side note all thoes fellows have passed on . But they still live on in my memories and stories

RIP to a fun bunch of guys

It hit eastern nc hard . Several hundred turkey , chicken and hog houses collapsed from snow on the roof . I lost one of my chicken houses . Our volunteer fire dept rescued about 75 folks who were stranded on our major highways ..

I was in college that year located in South Central Illinois. Several people were trapped on I 57, their cars covered by snow drifts. Some of them did not make it.

I do remember that winter. Lots of cold in Montana that winter. As I recall the month of January 1979 never got above 0 degrees. The hot parts of the days were 10 to 15 below, with lows 25 to 35 below. That is the coldest temps I have personally experienced. I do remember a couple of enterprising individuals from Missoula who hauled a couple drums of hot water out I90 west to the Frenchtowm truck scales. They dumped the water down inside the scale. The scale was closed til April.

I remember the winter storm of 1978 very well. We were the last plane out of Chicago to Jamaica. Two weeks later I listened to the stories about it with empathy while drinking rum.

It hit here in SEMO as well. Entire month of February we had no school. Kept about two feet of snow on the ground that whole month. Mama tied ropes to the back of the old Willys jeep and we added handles to the ropes. She pulled us around the fields on saucer sleds. Had a blast.

Snowing here now. Nothing close to two feet. Had about three to four inches from the snow we got late Thursday/early Friday.

Amarillo 1957 ,,,,,, the wind blew 40-60mph for four days. If you could make it to the grocery store, the windows were blown out, take only what you needed was broadcast on the radio. Herds of cattle died standing up in the corners of big pastures.

I left St.Louis Jan 2 1979. We drove across MO on I-44 on 4 inches of glare ice. Never got higher than -2. By the time we reached OKC the roads were down to snow covered. Arrived in Albuquerque and it was 45. We unloaded in shirtsleeves because it felt so balmy. Yeah I remember that all right.

I was 8 that year, on a farm 30 miles east of Amarillo. Snowdrifts tall enough you could walk over buildings; cattle could walk over fences. Was that the year they used C-119 "Flying Boxcars" to bomb hay to cattle?

I don’t remember what planes they used. Many cattle were too weak from hypothermia to get to the hay. I remember big snowballs that had formed on the nostrils of the cattle. Surreal to see cattle standing dead and falling over when the sun came out and temperature rose a few degrees.

Someyall figured out how to walk ten miles to school uphill both ways.

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Bought a new to me Jeep back in late March. didn't realize at the time the freaken tires were dry rotted. it was bad for the first couple of months but then nearly every Monday I'd have to fill up the right front tire. It would hold air for a week and then the same thing would happen. Every 6 weeks or so I'd have to fill up the right rear. Well i wanted to use the Jeep that weekend so I filled the tires up on Wednesday figuring I'd be good through the weekend. Then the cold snap hit -30 to -40 wind chills. at that temp the tire only lasted 2 days. So the Jeep sat all weekend, it was so cold I couldn't even put air in my tires. I have a 150psi, 33 gallon compressor and it was useless. Finally was able to fill them up Tuesday but my digital tire gage was pretty useless. Finally gave in and ordered a new set of tires. They were out of stock but there supposed to come in buy Jan. 2 I couldn't put up with this BS for the rest of the winter. At least the temps for the most part will be in the 40's well into Jan,
