In the "Hell's Coming To Breakfast" scene, when Josey first meets up with the Comancheros, he has his rifle in his right hand, and when the first Comanchero pulls his pistol, Josey shoots him with the rifle. In the next millisecond, Josey has a revolver in each hand and the rifle is nowhere to be seen.
Did he drop it on the ground?

Now I have to watch it again to see
Just a movie
But dang it Nunn I have to look it up after 20 plus times I never looked that close
I learned to just enjoy such shows as is start looking close almost zero movies and TV shows would pass any real world Facts
And I truly like the movie as most all of his movies a classic
If you liked the movie, you got to see this. Though it doesn't answer Nunns's question.
"Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms..."
Odds are good he drops it, but you do see him draw with his left hand and that is the next shot he gets off. Start at around 2:28 to see the portion of the scene in question.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
