M

onths after Jay Leno suffered "serious burns" in a gasoline fire while working on one of his vehicles, the comedian said he broke several bones in a motorcycle accident.

Leno, 72, was "knocked off" a motorcycle Jan. 17 by a wire strung across a parking lot, breaking two ribs, two kneecaps and a collarbone.

Leno said that he went out for a test drive on a 1940 Indian motorcycle and recognized the smell of a gas leak.

"I turned down a side street and cut through a parking lot, and unbeknownst to me, some guy had a wire strung across the parking lot but with no flag hanging from it," Leno told the Review Journal.

"I didn’t see it until it was too late. It just clothesline me and, boom, knocked me off the bike. The bike kept going, and you know how that works out."

"But I’m OK! I’m working this weekend," he reassured.

Who strings wire across a parking lot? Was it an entrance barrier?

Broken ribs and collar bone can be painful and a bit debilitating but the broken kneecaps are the worst. 10 years ago Judy broke one and it was a long three months, including surgery and wearing a brace before she recovered. Somewhere around here is a copy of her X-Ray showing the screws and the wire around the circumference of her kneecap to hold the pieces together while they healed. Because of the stress put on the kneecap by the muscles and tendons, there was no way for it to heal properly without attaching the pieces with the hardware the surgeon installed. Hope Jay recovers and bounces back again. Bob

I wonder if the guy who put that line up is liable? We string wires across field driveways but we always have some sort of flag or something that will attract attention. Catch a rider under the chin and it could be fatal. I would think putting up orange cones or something like that would have been a lot safer. Dang, Jay is sure having a string of bad luck.

About 20 years ago, some kids were riding dirt bikes near here and ventured onto some private property. The land owner has strung a cable across an access road. One young kid was severely injured when he rode into the cable. His parents sued and won. I remember the ruling was that the access road presented an " attractive nuisance ".

The concept may only apply to children.

Talking about bad luck for Jay, I also read that his Garage show was being cancelled. ☹️

I hope he recovers quickly from this accident.

When I was in high school a classmate was killed when he was decapitated by a cable strung across a path . Land owner didn't want kids riding mini bikes next to his house He was sued and the family won big time . I suspect he is still paying off the judgment.
