Winchester model 88 358

Debating weather to sell off my Winchester model 88 in 358. As most of you know, I collect the model 88 and have all four calibers, in different configurations. I started by collecting the post 64's. They only made them in the 308, 243 and the 284. Then I started collecting the Pre 64's and carbines. Last but not least, I got my hands on a rare transition piece. That was the year, 63 to 64, that they went from the checkering, to the basket weave . This has the basket weave on the underside of the forearm, which no other model 88 has.
Anyway, A friend of mine has been nagging me about the only 358 that I have. His father had one, and when he passed, his brother took it and sold it to a pawn store for drug money😤. I think I would have killed him. I finally am considering, selling off some of my collection. I have enjoyed them immensely, but never really shoot them. I have this motorcycle project going on and I can't take all these guns with me. Currently, the 358 is going for over 3,000 bucks, and even up to 4,000. I paid 1,200 for the rifle, quite a few years ago. Being this is one of my closes, dearest friends in the world, I would only consider selling it to him for the for mention reasons. What would be a fair price??? The friends price??? I was thinking somewhere between 1,500 and 1, 800. If I sold it on here, I would let the auction dictate the price. I wouldn't feel right making a ton of money off this guy. He is a huge hunter, watched over me after my heart attack while hunting, and we have been like brothers since we were 14. Oakie

is he any good at building bikes, if so give it to him in exchange for things you can't do on the bike build?....... never felt right making money off friends, sell another if need it for bike build.
What is he willing to offer? If its reasonable and you can afford it sell it to him for that amount. If you cant afford that, auction it off he will have his chance. Ive got a new Model 88 in the box never fired and Im kinda in the same boat. Im leaning towards giving it away to my friend and Im sure Ill feel better about it. You helped me out with a pellet gun for my grandson, and Ill never forget that kindness. Kinda nice to pass favors forward I guess.
He sounds like one hell of a good friend and having lost a couple of those over the years I'd lean towards takin' care of the friend. Do you need the money? If I could afford it I'd lean towards makin' him an early Christmas present.
I don't need the money. If I do sell it to him, which I probably will, I will just dump the money into the bike. He is already in my will to inherit a couple of my firearms. I know he will take excellent care of them and pass them down to his grandson.
Have two boxes of ammo that I can send you ,if it is legal to ship,let me know? WIN358 I would go for the bike!
Sell it to him for a couple hundred over what you have in it with the condition that if he ever sells it you have first shot at it for what you sold it to him for.
You can't put a price on friendship. If we are fortunate we get four or five in our life time. My best friend from 1958 passed last year without the proverbial pot to pee in. I paid for half of his cremation. If he were alive today he could have anything I own. I could never profit from a friend. I would sell off the lesser valued 88's and give him the .358. You said you don't shoot them much and are going to give it to him eventually. Enjoy watching him using it while he still can. My 88 is four digit with a Pachmayer and K-4. but alas the caliber is .05 smaller than yours. Semper Fi.
About 10 years ago, I worked with a guy who was a drummer, like me. At a company party (his house), some of us were jamming in the basement and he came up to me and said "do you want those drums". A Rogers kit, 50 years old, looked brand new. With the cymbals, they were worth about 3000 dollars.
I said "yes! what do you want for them". He told me "take them. but, if you ever sell them the money has to go toward someone else's future, has to help someone other than yourself." I still have the drums and plan to give them away to one of my nephews should they ever get into music.
Give the gun to your friend. Ask nothing except that, should he decide to get rid of the gun someday, the money must go to someone other than himself, to help out someone else.
