Cracker Barrel restaurants

We just love them. However with all this covid BS they just don't have the service they used to. Real shame.

I absolutely hate Cracker Barrel. It is a running joke in our family. Last Christmas, my wife and son got me a map of all the Cracker Barrels in the untied stated. Smart *. I like to stop anywhere , but there when we travel, but always lose out to the wife. She loves their food. The only thing I will eat there is Fried Chicken. That' not bad.

Their food is consistent and a lot better than some of the restaurants I have eaten at along the freeways.

Most any restaurant we patronize has had some decline in service/food quality since the bat pox damn panic. They still can't get a full compliment of help.

Diane and I use to stop in WVA on I81. I liked their Catfish a lot. They had a large gift shop out in the front by cash register. Bought a beautiful birdhouse there that i could not resist one year. --------------------Ray

I will eat at them when the boss insists . I would be just as happy at Arby's or maybe a Chinese joint to be honest.

I agree service had gone down. But so has their menu they took off some of the items, like a small rib eyed steak that was decent.

  • Rocky RaabRocky Raab Member Posts: 14,440 ✭✭✭✭

We like them. Breakfast, mostly. They are one of the few places out West that serve Southern foods like grits, greens, and catfish. They can indeed be crowded and noisy - but that means lots of other people like them, right?

The last time we ate at a Cracker Barrel, as we left, EMTs were trying to revive A man just outside the front door. Not sure if he was coming in or out, but I'm pretty sure he was gone.

By the way, isn't Cracker Barrel racist?

I love to eat at Cracker Barrel. Very good food.

I drive a lot, so I watch for Cracker Barrel when I need to make a stop. I haven't had any issue with their bathrooms, they have the craziest junk food selections....which is perfect for a long drive. I LOVE the catfish, the meatloaf is good and the chicken/dumplings is good too.....the sides are horrible. I don't know what is in their turnip greens that makes them taste like road kill is an ingredient, mac-n-cheese is not at all ok there, bland shredded potatoes with a thin layer of burnt cheese on top is NOT a "casserole". I usually get the breakfast anyway, just to avoid their horrific choices of sides. The last step of my visit is almost always getting a biscuit, spreading some butter and the YUMMY blackberry jelly on it...wrapping it in a napkin and shoving it in my purse for later. I'm sure I've caught the attention of other people doing this more than one time.

I give my son all the crazy junk I don't eat....hot win flavored cheese puffs, jellybeans, and lemon cookies was in the bag I handed him last week.

Cracker Barell has all those nice rocking chairs sitting out front and they sell them. Wife always sits in them to relax and says how comfortable they are.

I bought a couple and had them stashed away. Morning of her birthday they are on the front porch.

I got major points for that purchase.

They are the only restaurant that serves okra that I know of. I really like it.

  • Kevin_LKevin_L Member Posts: 2,011 ✭✭✭✭

I grew up in the South. But I have never eaten at a Cracker Barrel. I guess I was never in the mood for saltines or Ritz first thing in the morning.

Jason, we also have two of those rockers. Mine have the USAF crest, which they don't offer any more, AFAIK. They are very well made and have lasted us six or seven years so far.

I like okra, too. But I usually get the turnip greens. Despite what Kasey says about them, they're good - and they have the correct vinegar with peppers bottles to go along with it.

We were headed home from Michigan years ago and stopped in northern Ohio to eat there ONCE, never again.

Ours recently started carrying beer. We eat there about once a month.

Been a while but the last time I visited the local Cracker Barrel was on a very windy winter day. The open fireplace that was going started filling the place with smoke. I did have a meal with friends, but I smelled like a smoked hickory log for the rest of the day!

I did like the old style candys and stuff at the pay counter. Picked up some of those Neapolitan striped coconut bars! Hadn't had or seen them since I was a kid!

P.S. Our small town local drug store still sells Candy Cigarettes and horehound drops!

  • hillbillehillbille Member Posts: 14,395 ✭✭✭✭

hated to see them change their menu, seems they cut back on portions also..... but still one of the better places to eat in this area

  • William81William81 Member Posts: 25,353 ✭✭✭✭

We like to get breakfast at a nearby one from time to time. It is located near our Doctor's office so after fasting for med checks or whatever, it is an easy place to hit.....

I always seem to have that weird mentality after being told my Cholesterol levels are fine, the first thing I do is go eat a big breakfast of bacon and eggs !!!! 🙃

  • Rocky RaabRocky Raab Member Posts: 14,440 ✭✭✭✭

Kinda like a free pass, isn't it, William?

One of the gone menu items was the "Grampa" breakfast (or something like that.) It was really too much to eat and overly rich to boot. Now that I am a Grampa, I don't/can't eat like I used to. I'll get a meat and eggs with grits, corn muffins, and coffee and that fills me up. None of their hash brown casserole, thank you.

grampas country fried, they still have it but no grits now, not sure if it still comes with biscuit and gravy either, as you said it was too much, when I would get it, I was done for the day..........

and you can ask just for plain hashbrowns, at least they serve them that way around here..

  • Butchdog3Butchdog3 Member Posts: 943 ✭✭✭✭

Breakfast is pretty safe there. Other meals, eat at your own risk. Eat lunch at one on 77 north headed to PA. Exits were almost too far apart for comfort.😲

Last one we tried to get in to eat had about 25% of the seats taken. Hostess says you will have a 15 minute wait and would not seat us. The door did not hit us in the rear as we left. This one is just east of you 84.

I would blame on shortage of help.

  • scooterdriverscooterdriver Member Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭✭

Menu has a wide selection which helps ensure everyone can find something they want. If you like consistency, their meals taste the same no matter which site you visit. There's enough friction when road tripping...a reliable chow stop helps makes the trip more enjoyable.

Around home we rarely eat there...we've found local spots that we prefer.

  • William81William81 Member Posts: 25,353 ✭✭✭✭

A freebie for sure.....I am the same, usually a breakfast there fills me up for the rest of the day... All I need is a small supper on days when we eat there...

  • Henry0ReillyHenry0Reilly Member Posts: 10,893 ✭✭✭

Our favorite pizza joint shut down the dining room in 2020 and gave it up for good. I think they're missing an opportunity to rent it out for events.

Maybe there weren't enough servers. One or two people serving tables, clearing tables. Listening to some person wanting to talk about how cold it is. Or hearing someone complain about slow service and dirty tables. Just saying...

  • Butchdog3Butchdog3 Member Posts: 943 ✭✭✭✭

bs, that would be my guess to. Seen it happen way before the worlds worst scam.

Used to go there with my parents. Do miss the okra but we’re just not close by one

There's hardly a restaurant in the country that doesn't have a "We're Hiring" sign out. I won't delve into the political reasons why this is so, but will just point out that no place can seat more people than they can serve. They could certainly put people at tables, but if there aren't enough servers and cooks, it's going to be a LONG wait to get anything from menus and drinks to placing and eventually getting your order.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

EVERY place to eat in the nearby town has "HELP WANTED." as stated above. Cracker Barrel here is very good and tries to accommodate the hundreds of visitors that come there each day. Fast food here is a 50/50 of getting an order right and the "help" with few exceptions don't care.

  • Butchdog3Butchdog3 Member Posts: 943 ✭✭✭✭

just think of all the snot on those triangles, they took them away during the dangdemic. Back now.

  • Rocky RaabRocky Raab Member Posts: 14,440 ✭✭✭✭

Two large chains that can be depended upon in the West are Cracker Barrel and Black Bear Diner. Same menu and quality at any store you stop at. Good quality, too. Both have bigger portions than I can eat now that I'm older, but both also have "senior" or reduced size options. CB is more Southern- styled, so that can be a welcome change.
