Long trip, I am not going to drive it again

bpostbpost Member Posts: 32,669 ✭✭✭✭

Pomeroy Ohio to Farmington CT. to visit son, DIL and grandsons for a few days. The way people speed on the east coast blows my mind. In three lane moderate to heavy traffic, middle lane doing 75-80 to keep up with the flow in a 55MPH zone. Try to keep some distance between you and the guy in front a some one doing 85-100 will fill the hole. Got passed while doing 82MPH in a 55 by TWO different cops that were cruising the fast lane with the flow over 90MPH. Going that fast sure cuts gas mileage. If you crash at those speeds I don't think the airbags will help much.

On the trip back I stopped in Fairmont WV for the night. I was just too tuckered out to finish the three hours needed to get home.

Next time I will fly! It sure was awesome seeing the grandrats, I had a BLAST with them.

Had you been flying your own plane, you could have passed all those cars at well over 100 MPH.

Did your new bride go with you or she stay home??

Its called keeping up with the flow of traffic.

If you want a real eye opener, try downtown atlanta on the interstate in the rain! If you do the 55mph speed limit, then you wont make it far before the wreck!

I hate drivers who sit in the left lane & won't move over.

NJ head of the State PD got grilled in the papers for admitting that he drove 10 over so he wouldn't hold up traffic too much.

I've had a few close calls at very high speeds where an idiot passes and cuts into me close as a whisker's width!

I have taken to the off the beaten path roadways these days. Never in a hurry anymore anyway. The last cross country trip I took was from Michigan to Colorado's west side. I drove a Honda Element. As soon as I returned home, the car went up for sale. Bought a Dodge Durango. Comfort RULES!!

I've always thought that people who ignore some laws will ignore others. Bag limits, trespass, buying a license...you know, all those other "It doesn't hurt anybody" laws.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

I drive a LOT, the freeways are a speedway at this point. There are a LOT of areas that 80 mph is the speed everyone drives. Its just how it is now. The guys going 90 are nuts....trying to weave around the people already going 10 mph over the posted speed limit. The most dangerous thing I've seen are the people trying to go 60 in the center lane.....that is just scary as crap. People are zooming by on both sides.....people stuck behind them are trying to get around, making it a near crash every few seconds as someone comes up on them and picks left or right to go around, while both sides passing are going 80. I wonder if having a higher speed limit for the left lane would help. They say they will give you a ticket for cruising in the left lane....but I don't know of anyone that has ever gotten a ticket. The safest thing I think they could do is to make the far left lane 80mph....the center and far right can be 70. It might keep the "fast" people in one place and the slow guys would stay to the right. I have no idea if this would work, but it can't hurt to try something other than what mess they have now.

I have driven around Atlanta only once, back in 2018, from the airport to Augusta for the Masters. The rental company gave me a bright red 500-hp Dodge Challenger. Ticket magnet if ever there was one. I kept it at the posted limit, grimacing the whole time at being roared past.

BTW, in cruise control that beast did 70 mph - at 800 RPM.

Every time I go to Florida, I get flipped off at least twice per visit. They are absolutely nuts down there on the east side of the state.

Since I live here, I would say you are correct. My friend Curry, is a commander on the NJSP. They won't even look at you for speeding, unless you are doing over 80 on the expressways. They mostly look for people weaving and holding up traffic. We call them left lane dicks, or PA drivers. Most of them don't realize, that on a three lane expressway, the middle lane, is the truckers passing lane. They get out there doing 45 to 50 in a 70mph zone.

Now talk about white knuckle driving, Travel to Houston on route 10. You better have a will!!!! Last year leaving Houston, heading to San Antonio, I was doing 85 in an 80mph zone. Some old grey haired lady passed me at about 100mph and gave us the bird. My wife and I never laughed so hard in our lives🤣. I wish I could have caught up to her to buy her lunch. We still laugh about today!!!!

I sold my plane to prepare to retire. When I do I will be a flat broke Meigs Co. hillbilly that just happens to have my own teeth.

Honestly, we need to repeal all laws that has no victim if broken.

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Interstate 40 running thru Greensboro and Winston Salem will have you in prayer the whole route. . Used to do it on my motorcycle . Last 2 trips up that way I used other streets to bypass the towns. . Added a few miles but my survival was enhanced .

@bpost Funny thing while driving today. I was 10 over in the left lane passing a few cars when a mini van blasted up behind me. Big surprise, it was a Conn. veh, here in sw Va.

If you really want to have some fun, try driving from the Normandy beaches to Paris in the rain doing those speeds with motorcycles cutting the lanes.

I felt like I was in a Mad Max movie.

    ^^^BINGO^^^

Since most of my driving is 'on the clock' and a speeding ticket is a big 'no-no', I drive the posted speed limit. If someone feels the need to pass, go for it. If someone feels the need to display their personal feelings about this, let me know so we can have some quality time at the next turnoff.

Burlington Airport is one of the easiest in the country to get into/out of.

I have flown through there literally at least 100 times.

Choose your layover airport wisely & you’ll be mich happier with much more family time.
