Why everyone should own an AR-15

This video presents some great info regarding the history of arms in civilian hands and makes a great case for why folks should own the most advanced weapons available.

Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

I had an M-14 before the A.R.'s were issued. So naturally I have a Mini-14 now.

The M-14 is a great medium to long range weapon BUT the AR is better suited for the shorter ranges most likely to be engaging aggressors in a non-military scenario.

In the 'long ago and far away', the M-14 was usually the 'spotter' weapon while the primary used the bolt rifle. The spotter was expected to successfully engage targets up to 400-600 yards. The M-14 is heavy and has enough recoil to slow follow up shots.

For 'civilian use', the need for 400-600 yard engagements is very limited. I'd much rather have an AR with 300-400 yard capability, lighter weight, lower recoil, and just easier to carry.

Nice video, should be mandatory viewing by any one involved in making laws.

While I agree with him, I don't agree when he states the AK-47 was the first rifle in 500 years designed only for the military. Just previous he talked about the M1 Garand...which was developed for the military.

But the M1 was not kept out of civilian hands, and that is his point. The Soviets did not allow their citizens to be armed with the AK. In fact, that is the point of the entire video... that it wasn't until totalitarian governments (circa 1940s) developed arms only for the military NOT allowing ordinary citizens to own them, was there ever an idea that citizens shouldn't own the same arms as the military.

Got it. Does not come across that way since the Garand was designed for military use (Garand worked for the Army's Springfield Armory) and only after it ceased to be used by the US armed forces was it then available to the public. It was not designed for civilian use, same as the AK-47, only 10 years earlier. Give credit to Garand and not Kalashnikov. Certainly would like to have one.

I have one. Shot it today. Hands down the most accurate firearm I have at 100+ yards.

For the longest time I put off getting one. Always thought they were a "bro gun" the kind of thing the suburban survivalists owned but had no clue how to shoot. Really glad I took a chance on one. It's a fantastic piece of engineering and fun to shoot.

In 1964 the issue military weapon was the M-14. I carried one for two tours. What I'm saying, is I was familiar with the M-1 platform so I naturally gravitated to the Mini when they came out. In my opinion, it will do just about anything that the M-16 will do with the exception of all the add ons which I really don't need. I agree with you about the long range capabilities of the M-14. My weapon of choice a long, long time ago in a land far, far away was an M-2 Carbine with the stock cut behind the grip.

I prefer a weapon that uses powerful enough ammo that an entire mag isn't needed to stop one POS.

    many many years ago

the local ( 20 miles ) Woolworth store use to sell guns they got in a colt ar 15 this was around 1973 or 74

at the time I was making 1.60 a hour woo hoo

any way I ask to see it of course they handed it over to me . I knew then I had to have one but it was years before I could afford to get one

funny moment I pushed the rear take down pin and pulled the bolt carrier out just looking at the rifle

both the counter guys about fell over Thay just knew I had busted the rife 😁 I think it was around 300.00 but really do not remember the real price just it was out of my range

I put it back together to there amazement when I left they were still playing with the rifle

a few months later I did buy a universal m1 carbine from them 89.00

I liked and appreciated the video. The presenter has a much better and eloquent way to say what I have said for years.

Though I have never found a use for the AR-15, I see the appeal to some. I am not sure why I have not really wanted one. A suppressed one in .300 B.O. might be what could eventually entice me to "the dark side". ;-)

I may have built a few or so. Have them in 300BO, 6ARC and 450BM plus several uppers ready to roll.

One thing I have never figured out is the so-called "effective range" of a caliber or round. For sake of discussion the AR in 5.56 is supposed to be a 500 Meter round/rifle. I have a hunch if you had a squad of guys popping at bad guys at 1,000 meters using semi-auto the bad guys are not going to appreciate getting hit with that bullet anywhere they have flesh. A 22LR at 1,000 meters is still gonna leave a hole in you where good stuff will leak out.

Too bad the people who need to watch it never will

As normal the gun cominuty will watch and understand his views and reasoning may not 100%agree but will watch and listen

the anti gun groups that hate us will never watch or understand way too much kool-aid had passed their lips

  • MobuckMobuck Member Posts: 14,083 ✭✭✭✭

"Effective range" is generally meant to to be the maximum distance at which the weapon can consistently hit and cause significant injury/damage to the target(man or equipment).

A 22lr is NOT EFFECTIVE @ 1000 meters mostly due to the inconsistent capability to make hits and lack of energy at that range. Even the .308 is not impressively effective @ 1000 meters in actual combat use.

I love my 60's era AR10, but I also love my AR15's but in 6.8 SPC.
