I think they may have overreacted a little.
Note: he didn't actually go to jail.

Gone are the days that every guy in school had a pocket knife. I've carried one ever since, unless going on an airplane. Other than airports it is an everyday item and I don't even think about it. I might guess it was the same for that volunteer. Either he forgot he had it on his belt or wasn't aware of the rules. The schools and police reactions were a little over the top. How many of the kids and faculty will need therapy because of this traumatic event? (sarcasm)
Of course I could be wrong. Maybe it was an evil black assault knife with an extended magazine!😀 Bob
I had to go the Social Security office. As I entered, an ARMED guard asked if I had a knife on me. I told him I knew how * the government is, and that I had left my fingernail cleaner in my truck. I didn't mention my CC pistol, which was also in my truck!
Agree with Bob. In younger days of school my pocket knife was my Boy Scout knife. It was almost like my duty to carry it.
Mumbly Peg at recess!
I am not dressed without my knife in my pocket. Bet he felt the same way .
sad we have come down to this
like most of you , when I was younger most boys had a pocket knife in grade school in high school a gun in your truck or car was even common, we know its not the knife or gun its the people and kids have no respect or regard for life or people any more , but easy to blame a inanimate object . instead of facing the facts
I have carried a pocket knife since my dad gave me my first one I was about 6 or 7 yrs old
he had broke the tip off one of the blades on his so he bought a new one and gave me the old one
no one even gave it a second thought . I even had a cheap sheath knife I carried around home to play with I never threated any one or hurt any one ( well Ok a few nicks and cuts on my self 🤨 )
high school I carried a buck 110 every day and had switch blade and a huge stiletto lock blade knife I would take in for the fun of it some days . ( disclaimer I am sure the switch blade would have got me in trouble )
I even took a m1 carbine to 9th grade class for show and tell with my teaches approval.
today they would roll out swat teams , news crews the anti gun groups would be there and swat would have shot my dog on the way just because ,
obvious took me down at school I hope with out a few holes in me and locked me up
I remember being 4-5 yrs old having a heavy plastic folder knife from the dime store. I actually would sharpen mine and it'd cut the newspaper as well as dad's pocket knife. Yes, it cut my fingers too a few times.
I've carried a pocket knife since I was about 8 years old and so did every guy I knew. Carried one all through high school, the Navy, college, every job I've ever had and still carry one at 76 years old and oddly enough, I've never robbed a store, a person or a bank. I've never killed anyone, threatened to kill anyone or brandished a knife, ever and now I carry both a knife and a gun and the same rules apply.
Yes sir, ^^^^
What I want to know is why when Dear old Dad and I go to the VA clinic why I have to rely on them to protect me.

I remember guys taking rifles to rural schools, putting them in their lockers because they were deer hunting after school. Food on the family table trumped paranoia in those days. Was not like that where I went to school, but I could have carried concealed, had I known what that was.
I did carry my pocket knife into the county offices. They said the blade was under 4" so it was OK. It is actually 3.5, but I bet it would still hurt.
I can't even remember how young I was when I got my first pocket knife. But I do remember the first one being a Barlow. I think it was around the 2nd grade. After the Barlow came the Buck 110 and have been carrying one ever since the only thing that has changed is I carry the new light weight Buck 110 for EDC
Yes gone are the days when guns and knifes were common in school.
My wife is a teacher and when we lived in Maine the largest fundraiser her classes had was serving breakfast the opening day of deer season. Our town was only 800 people but Hunters came from all of the surrounding towns to fill the cafe.
We would start serving at 4 am, eggs, bacon, sausage, beans and pie.
The school cafe was filled with hunters and their guns because everyone wanted to see what the other person was shooting. Never had an issue.
This could never happen today.
Seriously, evacuate the school, no class next day. That is obscene by the school and all involved. The insanity is off the rails, I mean it.
I would like to have back every pocket knife I have lost over the years. they would fill a large bucket.
I remember shotguns leaned into the corners at band practice after the traditional labor day opening of dove season...and everyone had a knife to clean the doves.
If carrying a knife was against the law when I was in grade school, I would have been on death row.
Bet you didn't have strings on your mittens either.
Sad those days are long gone
Society has lost too much respect for life and themselves
Or waiting at the caddy shack to pick up a client back in the days before golf carts were invented. 75 cents for nine holes if memory serves me. Williamsport, Pa. mid 1950's
I was in eighth grade at a big high school in Atlanta. My History teacher said he wanted to show a WW2 rifle to the class. I told him my dad had a British Enfield. He said to bring it.
The next day, I got on the school bus with the Enfield slung over my shoulder. The bus driver said "Isn't that an Enfield?"
I carried the gun into school and put it in my locker. The History teacher showed the rifle to the class, and at 3:15 I rode home on the bus with the rifle. Nobody said a negative thing about the rifle.
If a kid tried that today, the kid would be met at the bus stop in the morning with the DeKalb County SWAT team and he'd be lucky to get out of it alive.
