Tiny Guns

Ricci.WrightRicci.Wright Member Posts: 5,128 ✭✭✭✭

So as not to steal a thread.

I bought one of the NAA Guardian .380 pistols when they first came out. It was a cheap version of the Seacamp, was too "dense", like a sharp edged heavy rock in the pocket and not reliable. I have a tiny Keltec P-380AT which weighs around 10 oz., shoots well enough but I think I have put less than 50 rounds through the little thing. It is flat and carries well in the pocket but it is hard to shoot well. I have to regrip every three rounds as it is squirting out the top of my hand. This is on a range with dry hands, not when someone is trying to kill me. The little flip barrel Beretta shoots well but I don't want a .22 to bet my life on. Too many misfires and too little power. I don't care if the bad guy dies later on, I need him STOPPED Right Now. Right this second. Three seconds is a long time if someone is stabbing you with an ice pick. Everyone should carry what they want and yes, any gun, even a tiny 22 is better than empty hands but I personally would prefer a good blade. My smallest carry gun is one of my aluminum frame S&W five shot revolvers. Hammerless, 15 oz and loaded with 158 gr. +P cast bullets in a decent pocket holster. I hope I don't need it, but I have a lot of faith in those little revolvers if I do. Oh, and I carry a Speed Strip with six extra rounds as well.

Yeah, I was expecting comments about tiny guns for tiny hands.

Nearly all of the time, just knowing that the intended victim is armed is enough to deter any further action by the perp. He don't wanna be gut shot with a .22 and have to 'splain to the E.R. how it happened. And It HURTS, and if ya' shoot 'em 2-3 times it hurts even more. Plus, them tiny .22's pass right through sose there ain't no forensics to tie yer gun to the shootin'. And if you use a revolver, there ain't no cases neither to match yer lil pea shooter to. Like I said earlier, the NAA is my back up to my back up depending on the situation.

carry a 38 derringer with two extra bullets in my change pocket, get some stares sometimes when pull out my change to ccount out for someone at register, but I figure If I can duck down for quick second or two I could reload, and as someone else said in the other thread, if you hold it in your fist the butt sticks out a few inches and it would really put a dent in someones head if you were to hit them hard enough. I carry it in my back pocket and most days forget its even there as I have got used to it and it feels about like carrying an extra wallet.........

I have a sp101 in 357, and also a full size barretta in 40 but they are to heavy for everyday carry, the barretta I use a shoulder holster and the revolver I usually just leave in the door of the truck in a waistband holster. With my eyes both are hard to shoot as I need readers to see the sights, and then have to bob my head to see the target clear, thats why I like the derringer at across the room distance its just point and shoot, and I can hit a man size target, though I hope I never have to use it.....

My Keltec P-380AT fell apart in my pocket. The hammer spring retention block at the bottom of the grip fell out and rendered the gun useless. Keltec wanted 60 bucks to fix it, plus shipping both ways. All this for a gun I paid $180 OTD for. It hangs on a nail above my computer to remind myself to not buy junk for defense. I now carry a S&W Bodyguard in .380. It is a tad heavier but shoots rather well. I use a front pocket holster that makes it look like a wallet.

I had a little North American mini 22lr revolver in my purse for a while. Just for fun we took it out when we were plinking around in the back yard one day. Only 2 of the rounds fired. It turns out that 22 rounds can be inert just from being bounced around.....the filiment in the rim can fall out or break up, making it misfire. 22 rounds can even go dead when brand new....depending on how vigorous the shipping was and how old it is. I just don't trust 22s at all....not for protection.

HiStandard makes a derringer in .22 mag. Great little gun.

I wouldn't want to get hit by that.

I carry a Ruger LCPII. Had a Keltec P3AT for a long time, decided to upgrade. The Ruger shoots good. The main problems with these little guns are grip and muzzle flip. Grip is just something to work on, flip is something I try to solve with the ammo. I chose INCEPTOR ARX 380. It has a 56gr bullet made of a polymer mixed with copper. After shooting multiple targets from soft to steel, I'm satisfied that I can use them for self defense. Double taps at 5 yards hit inside 4".

I also carry the same ARX ammo in my 9mm and 45ACP. Check out the ballistics tests on Utube.

I have one of those that I bought from a friend back around 1993 for $15. He was a retired cop. Those things sell for around $500 now. Best gun buy I ever made. He also sold me a HS riot gun for $50.

I routinely pocket carry a KelTec P-32..........doesn't print at all even in light weight shorts. Mine works like a champ.

My first thought was that the retired cop no longer needed a "plant" gun.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

We have 4 tiny guns here. My wife has a S&W Bodyguard .380 that she wanted. I have a first gen Ruger LCP, Taurus 850 .38 Special and a Bond Arms Texas Defender in 9mm. But I carry a S&W Shield more than anything else these days. My mindset has changed a little with the times. These criminals travel in groups. And the Shield isn’t that much bigger than a snubby .38 and has almost double the capacity.

Depending on my mood I carry either a smith 38 spl airweight, a pa63 or s&w shield 45. Very low threat environments it may be a colt junior 25acp.

Glock 43 is as small as I will go. If I can't shoot it well I won't carry it.

  • Ricci.WrightRicci.Wright Member Posts: 5,128 ✭✭✭✭

EXACTLY!! Most folks can't hit anything on a bright sunny range day but think they will do just fine when some ape with a great big knife is trying to kill them. Think again.

I like the little Kel-Tecs. I've been carrying my P-3AT .380 - 1st generation since 2003. It has been a great little gun. Mine weighs just under seven and a half ounces empty. The 1st generation is a little lighter than the later P-3AT's. I haven't had a chance to shoot it in several years but before when I did shoot it at the range every couple of months it never had a hiccup.

Here ya go. HiStandard derringer in .22 mag.

No external hammer, no safety. Very simple gun, you just pull the trigger. Let's say you are in town at 9pm leaving the restaurant. Five guys armed with knives accost you. Wait 'till they are five feet away, shoot the first guy in the chest. The second guy, you go a little low and hit him in the belly. Both guys will probably die. Do you think the other 3 guys will yell out, "It is a 2-shot derringer boys, let's attack!" There in the dark, they don't know if it is a six shooter or a Glock.

No. You will then see 3 world's records set for the 100 yard dash.

Yes, if it got down and dirty I'd rather have 15 in the mag in the Beretta, but in the real world the little HiStandard would get the job done. Little bitty gun, slips right into your pocket.

I too have a High Standard .22 mag. and will take it anywhere and fill secure, a tad heavy compared to newer firearms but that's OK, It fits anywhere on a body comfortably.
