Went bear hunting last night
I left home at 9:30 pm last night and drove to my favorite spot to watch for bears. I am in Alaska so it is daylight until about 11 pm. I hadn't been there long before I saw a bear about 50 yards away at the edge of a clearing. It was a huge bear that I instantly recognized as an Alaskan coastal brown bear. I couldn't shoot because the brown bear season closed three weeks ago, and only black bears are legal now. He was eating dandelions and came within 25 yards of me without showing any alarm. I was ready to shoot in case he charged but he moved off into the woods after a few minutes. During the brown bear season all I saw were mostly black bears and porcupines; Now that the brown bear season is closed, I see one of the largest brown bears of my life. That's the way hunting goes. My heart took about 30 minutes to start beating somewhat normally again. I didn't have my camera or I would have made pictures. If you want to see bears, just leave your camera at home.

Bear season in June? Y'all have some weird hunting regs up there.
You're not alone in seeing the big ones out of season. Deer, elk, they all do it. But just getting out and being able to see them is still a good time.
Spring bear season here closed on May 31 for browns and closes on June 31 for black bears.
Attached is a photo of a young brown bear I saw 2 years ago at the same time of year.
Next time just take some black spray paint with you.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Do you have to spray paint it before you shoot it or could you do it after?

What do I look like a game warden?
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Depends on the light.

Just listened to a podcast. Dan Bigley, who is from Alaska was hiking out after fishing and accidently got too close to a grizzly's cubs. Lived to tell about it. Barely lived.
True.
But I also think/hope one would know this was joking and not a literal suggestion.
Contrary to popular belief, we have quite a large bear population in NorCal. I have many pictures of those we have encountered. We have harvested two in the past and both were great eating. The teeth and claws make great necklaces too. Great conversation starters!!! I have made some for the neighbor kids. One time I was calling one with a fawn bleat and he got too close. I Headed back to the truck and Julie was watching my 6 with the mini 14. BTW, we are both 79 and have our deer and bear tags for '23.
Of course we have a June 31 in Alaska, it comes right after June 30. However, we then have to skip July 1 and go straight to July 2 after June 31. Actually, I think I've been here too long, as I've begun to believe that there are no firm rules for doing most things. Watches and calendars are optional, and there are at least three ways to spell most words. To tell the truth, I had just typed May 31 then typed June 31 without thinking.😏
