Bye Incandescent Light Bulbs

BrookwoodBrookwood Member, Moderator Posts: 13,723 ******

As of August 1st, no stores will be allowed to sell incandescent light bulbs all across the country.

IMHO, probably not a bad thing for many reasons but if you are a freedom loving person like me, this seems like another squeeze on our capitalistic ways and freedoms.

I changed out my incandescent bulbs some time ago in order to save on escalating electric bills. It was a noticeable difference at the time but the current bills are now even higher then they were back before I made those changes.

Anyhow, the way I was brought up to never throw away items that are brand new and still working, I retain a stash of those incandescent bulbs. Who knows, in the not so distant future they may either have some collector value or may become a trade item in the apocalypse yet to come.

Like you I have a stash of incandescent bulbs that may never get used. Heck, I even have a dozen or so of the old F40 fluorescent tubes stockpiled. Also, like you I have been replacing old bulbs with LED ones. It has taken a while, but LEDs are not only becoming affordable but now come in more varieties. I finally switched over some 3 way bulbs in some table lamps a year or so ago when I found some practical and cheap LED replacements. And while I resent being forced to comply with most anything, in this case it won't effect me much. Bob

I have one night timer light that is probably 40 years old. Still works fine, turning on a light at dusk via a light sensor, and has variable "on" times from two to eight hours. However, its circuitry was designed for incandescaent bulbs. It will not work with those curly compact fluoros. I have not yet tried it with the current LEDs, but it didn't like earlier ones, either.

This timer suits my needs exactly, and they don't make anything like it any more. I'm hoping that newer LED bulbs might work in it, but I have a stock of incandescent 60-watt bulbs on hand. When they're gone... who knows.

I've switched everything else to LED. The first ones we bought almost a decade ago cost $40 a bulb. Now, they're about three bucks. I'm replacing a ceiling fixture today. It has the old sockets, in which I have LEDs now. The new one doesn't even have sockets, just squares of LEDs permanently wired in.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

    They don’t make’em like they use to ,,,,, 😂

The Centennial Light is the world's longest-lasting light bulb, burning since 1901, and almost never turned off. It is located at 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, California

I currently use only one incandescent bulb. It's for heat in the "cat house" on our porch in the winter. I put it on a dimmer switch & it has lasted 2 winters so far. I have enough in stock to out live me. I guess those who get frozen pipes, etc. should stock up.

Remember that LED lightbulbs in your garage may interfere with the garage door opener.

Just switched my yardlight to LED. $130 installed. See no real difference.

You can still buy incandescent bulbs on Amazon.

This is so stupid. I have many switches and receptacles that do not work properly with anything but. And what about heat lamps?

You also need "special" dimmer switches with LED's🤨

The warranties on the alternatives are a joke. Rarely will you find one that will last for the stated time. Gets very old sending in FIM's for replacements. Meanwhile my Uncle keeps sticking his nose where it does not belong. If only I could get my water saver toilet to flush properly on the first flush.-------------------------------------------Ray

I’ve got maybe 30 or 35 100watt incandescent bulbs stored away. I bought them when Obama signed that bill back when ever to save the world from incandescent bulbs. I use them in the pole barn, 6 bulbs on the rafters. They work better than fluorescent bulbs in the winter. Never tried LED in the cold weather. I hate turning on the lights and having to wait forever for them to put out light.

And, for big excitement, you could screw the leftovers back in and double your electric bill!

I keep reading they last 22 years. Great, they will last more than the rest of my life, saving even more money. Yeah, you got it, those have been replaced; twice in some cases.

    I hear ya.👍

Years ago, I was in the midst of converting from incandescent to CFL bulbs and found that the lamp fixture sockets had been degraded from the years of incandescent bulb use. The brass rivet at the bottom of the aluminum fixture socket had become loose due to the higher incandescent power..........and caused lamp flickering.......which only worsened with the new CFL bulbs. The six sockets, over our kitchen table, had to be replaced.......fun times. Sooner or later, I'll have to replace the bathroom wall switch that feeds four lamp sockets.

I still need the old incandescent bulbs........for heat for my stock finishing dry box, and small lamp I use to help epoxies cure.

You can buy the low voltage infrared heat lamps in 25 and 40W for reptiles for this use. I use one in my 800 gallon rainwater collection shed to keep the suction drain manifold from freezing.

From what I read in the Energy Independence and Security Act that certain groups of incandescent bulbs will be exempt from these new regulations (bug lamps, infrared lamps and marine lamps). I think these EISA standards are mostly to affect homeowner and business lighting. Judicious shopping for the rural homeowner or farmer will find plenty of alternate bulb availability.

Went to Lowes just now to pick up a few more 60w bulbs. None there of any wattage except specialty ones like heat lamps.

I didn't like those curly fluoro CFLs but I have one in my garage that has burned now 24/7 for at least two years. I put the date on it when I screwed it in, but only the day and month. Didn't imagine it would last more than a few months, but there it is, still going strong.

When it finally dies, wife wants me to put in a motion-sensing LED. I'd rather have full-time light, but she gets what she wants.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

ln another life l used to hang around US Army tactical communications gear. All this equipment was truck mounted and mobile. Power came from mobile generators. The interior of these shelters were lit with fluorescent fixtures. Each flourescent light had an incandescent bulb to keep the fluorescent tubes warm in cold weather . These little Christmas tree size bulbs were called ''exciter bulbs''.. lncandescents ALWAYS work. That's more than l can say for the folks making these silly rules/laws😵

I just ordered a goodly supply of them from Amazon. I wonder if they'll continue to offer them that way. I also wonder if the next President will reverse this stupid decision. Hope so.

The light bulbs are just a start, and an easy way for them to start the boring, kinda like a tick. Once they get into you, and your life, the light bulbs will seem trivial...

I thought the ban was on Manufacturing or production of them not the selling, though when they sell through that will be it........

Wife needed horse/donkey feed - we went to Tractor Supply - they HAD (operative word) a few 200 watt and 3 - 300 watt light bulbs that I need for certain applications.

    Best Regards - AQH

On a side note... They stopped making washing machines with water level settings. Now it takes longer for the new machines to sense how much water to use while using more electricity. Then, you have to set it to rinse twice since it reduces the water amount. Guess they figure we're too stupid to set a water level. Rant over.

Just got back from Lowe’s. Kid asked me why I was buying so many night light bulbs, I told him we plan on handing them out on Halloween.

Most all of ours are now LED. Like them much better too. Cleaner, bright light with no yellow tint or hallow around light. Way easier on old eyes.

You are right in a way. One of the first things they started doing when the CF bulbs came out was start making the filaments thinner and thinner and jacking the price up. I hated the CF bulbs color and refused to buy them but when regular bulbs lasted less than 6 months, I started buying the CF ones. They didnt last more than a year and by then the LED were starting to come out. We have lived in this house 17 yrs and there are more than a few bulbs I know I have never replaced. I have replaced a few of the outside security lights with three head LED fixtures that so far have been great. I was in Lowes Sunday and did not see them emptying out all the shelves.... I have yet to see a Mogul base LED bulb nor any that will fit the halogen fixtures in most of my bathrooms.
