our old maytag died tonight. Not worth the time or money to repair. Really old model. With that said, are they still as good quality of days gone? TIA

    Joe......

We've had two Whirlpool dishwashers over the past 38 years......with good results.

Whatever brand you go with, make sure it has a "food grinder" function in its design. High temperature wash is nice also.

BUT.......having said that......I think I may need a new water valve in ours.

    Hope this helps.

That just happens to us last fall. Bosch is what we had, worked great for 20 years. Tried to get another one and was told in September 2022 by local appliance store they would not get them until March of 2023.

They said they could have top of the line KitchenAid by December. Went with the KitcheAid. We have been very happy. Super quiet and lots of options for loading the machine.

We also put in a KitchenAid when we remodeled and are quite happy with it. It's less than two years old at this point but it gets the dishes clean and is very quiet.

Pretty sure her Dad didn't brand her or if he did, I haven't seen it.

We have a Bosch. Super quiet and flawless for eight years now.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

We bought a Bosch earlier this year after our Kitchen Aid went belly up. It does a very good job on the dishes, but there is one cycle that gets pretty noisy for a while. Other than that we are very happy with it.

Everything is designed with planned obsolescence now. Buy one, add the warranty and cross your fingers.

My last dishwasher was a top of the line Kenmore. It lasted 25 years and was still going when I removed it. Weighed a ton and used hand truck to take it to the road. Bought a GE in Bisque only because I wanted to match rest of Appliances in my Kitchen and general color scheme. Big Mistake. I can pick up this thing with one hand it is so light. So many negatives that I won't waste your time here.

When you install the dishwasher yourself you get a pretty good chance to see how it is built. I paid less than $500 for this one and it is junk. I never buy extended warranties but could tell when I put it in that I would purchase a extended warranty. Now they keep after me all the time to keep extending it. No way! I will be so glad when this thing breaks down permanently and I can turn it into roadkill.

My advice is don't skimp on purchase price because you usually get what you pay for. A really good dishwasher is not cheap like the old days and if you are not installing it yourself and you have to re-invent your plumbing, you are talking big bucks.----------------Ray

PS: Forgot to mention that this dishwasher was B/O forever.

When we redid our kitchen a couple of years ago we bought a Kitchen Aid. Sold that house and I am currently redoing the kitchen in our current house. Bought the same Kitchen Aid as before. Extremely quiet and did a great job cleaning the dishes.

    Joe, short answer. No! ---------------------Ray

We have a Bosch, it's great and you can't even hear it run.

Had the same one in our other house, never a problem and it does an excellent job.

We have a Bosh also and it does quite well

Bosch also, very quiet, not crazy about the racks, not enough tilt so bottoms of glasses, mugs etc. that are concave hold water. Also have a Bosch table saw. not quite, but no water either.

Another person with some bad results with Whirlpool products. Before we moved into our current home in 2014, we gutted the kitchen and replaced everything. All new Whirlpool appliances were installed. We also redid the laundry room and installed a Whirlpool Washer and dryer...

The washer required two major repairs within the first 3 years. It went down again and we replaced it with another brand... The Microwave died after 2.5 years, replaced with another brand.. Refrigerator has required two major repairs costing almost as much as we paid for it.... So far the dishwasher has held up....

Whirlpool was no help when they were contacted with issues concerning these appliances. Usually within a week of contact with them, we received an invitation to purchase an extended warranty.... No more Whirlpool appliances for us..

I've got a good reliable dishwasher.

She does a really good job.

She was gone for couple weeks and when the sink got full of dishes I started using dishes out of the seldom used automatic dishwasher.

After about 3 days of using those dishes and the dishwasher almost empty of dishes I noticed some dried egg yellow on a plate. I got to looking at the dishes and they had not been clean cycled yet. I lived through it. I had to hand wash some dishes, the double sinks were full .

I've got a paper from a bone specialist (that I had them prepare before being released) that I'm not suppose to wash dishes, mop floors, run vacuum cleaner or do latrine duty due to a previously broken arm. That note with the restrictions (due to possibility of re-occurring injury) is from about 15 years ago and I have copies hidden as a backup that I have to show the wifee every once in awhile.

I've also noticed that the dishes are suppose to be WASHED BEOFE putting them into a Auto dishwasher. HUMMMMMMMMMMMM

I ask a Service guy awhile back about average cost of a home service call to repair a dishwasher or similar type appliance. He indicated probably about average of $200, usually have to make at least two trips to tell you it not worth repairing or cannot repair. He agreed that less hassell to just go buy new and get a warranty.

He said they do not take in appliances to be repaired in their shop, service calls only.

Have a Samsung…noisy, 2:59 for a cycle, mediocre job, quirky electronic issues…stay away.

Whichever brand, get one with a stainless steel inside. Outside is just for looks, but steel inside helps hold the heat and dries better.

My current dish washer has a manual setting. Either me or she does the dishes. She uses the dishwasher to store her doll house building supply's.

It is a Maytag model that came with the house and worked as it was designed but never really got the dishes clean probably because of our hard water. When one of the seals started to leak, I just closed off the water suppy and here we are today.

If and when we ever decide to move, I'll install a new one for the next owner.

Thanks everyone. I've heard bosch was really good, and now many replies here confirmed that.

See my post above. My sweetheart Diane passed away last Christmas and little Willie passed two months ago. It is just me now. If this GE becomes Roadkill, I will probably install a panel to match cabinets and do my own KP. --------------------Ray

Bosch here too. Our second. The first one fried the main circuit board after about eight years. I could have replaced it but it was a bit pricey. I actually bought the control board that's in the door. It wasn't the problem. I still have it. Went and bought another one. For me, nothing in it's price range works better. A salesman told me there's dishwashers and dish rinsers. Bosch is a dishwasher.

We just bought three whirlpool dishwashers for our rentals. We had Maytag's before and one Bosch in our home. The Bosch gave us nothing but headaches, but that could have been a fluke. I personally like their products. The Whirlpools are all super quite and run well. The Maytags were all good too... Donna does her research before buying anything. Joe, I don't think you can really go wrong with any you choose. The new Whirlpool's we bought, I can't even here them running.

Stay away from Samsung it didn't even make a week and it's Customer No Service took almost close two months to finally get a replacement

  • 4205raymond4205raymond Member Posts: 3,316 ✭✭✭✭

Next door neighbor bought Samsung washer and dryer about 1.5 years ago. Really, really hi-tech appliances. For six weeks or more their tech's were there constantly. One day both machines carried away and they never came back. --------------------Ray

  • truthfultruthful Member Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭✭

The biggest problem with dishwashers is the touchpad control strip on the top of the door, regardless of make or model. Every time you do a load of dishes, that electronic strip is exposed to the heat and moisture.

got a friend who used to own an appliance store sales/repairs. His big complaint with Bosch is they won't sell part to anyone but an authorized bosch repair center, and around here there ain't one close, He has to turn down repair calls for them........ hope your situation is different

    Just a funny side note

Not sure who actually made outsbut it gets a workout and I think is at least tje 3rd one

About seven or eight years ago my youngest son's GF loaded up the dish washer then filled the dispenser with regular dish soap like dawn

Letsjust say Yep don't do it unless you want a sitcom secen of soap bubbles

We had them but never used them our first house had a brand new one which we never turned on and fifteen years later we sold the house. Same thing with a vacation house we had a brand new dish washer and never used it. Our current house had one but I pulled it out and replaced it with a cabinet.

    Update on dishwasher........

The water valve checked ok.......seems there was "operator error".....the wife.

I downloaded a copy of the owner's instruction manual.......and am trying to figure out a way to "present" it to her.......without getting injured.🤯

    Hope she NEVER reads this......😎
