Need help with Japanese rifle

The older gentleman that lives across the street from me, Just came over and gave me an old war rifle. His father brought it back from WWII. It was a battlefield pickup. It has a sling with Japanese markings and looks like a 7.7, But I am not sure. It looks a little different from my 7.7. What other types of rifle did Japan use in WWII??? It is bolt action. It needs a good cleaning, but otherwise is in nice shape. I want to shoot it. I know it probably has no value, but if anyone has any idea how much it is worth, let me know. Oakie

That is a gem!! 6.5 caliber Type 38- That sling and MUM convinces me it IS a battlefield pickup!!!
WORTH, ohh yea, that thing is a grand waiting to happen all day. ALL DAY
Wow, nice gift.
Nice call, Walt.
Outstanding rifle!
What is that cover over the action for? Don't believe I've seen that.
Nice gift for you Oakie.
That is a “ dust cover” most took them off because they rattle when bolted. That is a nice rifle. Check to see if bolt matches the receiver serial number Oak-
You need to take that man out for a very expensive dinner, Oakie!
It's a dust cover. Just helps keep junk out of the action.
Nice post, Steve. I was wondering what was going on with that.. Very, very cool rifle.
Since it's possibly a battle pickup, check to see if the action screws are still staked in place. If so, leave them alone as it adds value. Nice rifle 👍️
It still has the mum flower on the receiver which will make it more valuable.
Wait, is this the GB forum or am I somewhere else? Where are all the posts saying "it's complete junk send it to me?"
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
I have shown the way.
Nice rifle Oakie. 😀

What used to be a $35 Jap rifle is now $200 ++. I got most of my deer with a sporterized 7.7mm Jap. Unlike the 7.7mm the 6.5mm Jap barrel was not chrome plated and may or may not be in good condition.
I will have to see , but I would be positive that the numbers all match. Like I said, I no nothing about these. He also has the bayonet that he is going to give me. He just has to find it. It is laying around somewhere he said. I have an original 7.7 battlefield pickup , with the bayonet and sling, that my dad gave me when I was 14. I shoot that one all the time. I'm going to have my friend, whom is an armorer, go over it and make sure it is good to shoot, which I imagine it is. I called him today, and he said to drop it off. He also said he probably has a few rounds for it. Thanks for all the help. I will let you all know when I shoot it, and give a range report. Oak
Oakie PPU makes some nice new ammo for that rifle. The old stuff is very corrosive. They are very good shooters. The 6.5 craze is nothing new its been around a long time. Even if the bore is dark it should still shoot. Just got a replacement barrel for a customer. You have a very nice gift. The whole package is worth a very big number. Have fun an enjoy it.
Nice gun.
Great gift! I am waiting for Yoshmyster to chime in.
I wish I had neighbors like that.
