Gun control, my father's way

Kevin_LKevin_L Member Posts: 2,011 ✭✭✭✭

"You boys get to shoot whenever you want. If I see you two messing around, you'll get to shoot when I say so. Understood?"

"Yes, dad."

Those were the rules. Simple, to the point, and enforced with no negotiation. My brother and I only screwed up once and it cost us 2 weeks of shooting. He took the guns from us right then and there, turned, and went back to the house. To help make his point even more clear, dad went out by himself to shoot and never offered us the chance until the 2 week sentence was complete.

Lesson learned and never forgotten.

It's too bad there aren't more fathers like yours.

What did you do to deserve the two weeks suspension?

Oh, I knew someone would ask! 😁

My brother and I were waving the 22s around, not carrying them safely. We were pretending to take shots at things as we walked out to the 'range' (a large oak tree where we would put cans and stuff). That's all it took to get suspended for 2 weeks.

And I approve of such discipline. A simple act of punishment reinforced the notion that you can have anything in the world as long as you're respectful and humble. Without those 2 things, you may end up with nothing.

When I was shooting for the first time, 5 years old, My dad drilled into my head to keep the rifle pointed down range. I would shoot, then turn around with the gun and ask for another round. I would point the barrel right at my dad. The second time I did this, My dad ripped the gun out of my hands and put it back in the case. I was shocked, but could see by the look on his face that I messed up. I wasn't allowed to shoot for a while after that, until I could prove to him that I was safe with a empty gun. I never made that mistake again and instilled that in my sons, when they were young. Till this day, I try to drill that into new shooter heads when they are doing their probation period at the club. I still have adults turn around with loaded pistols and rifles when there is a problem/jam/hangfire, with their firearm. Having even a unloaded firearm pointed at you is scary enough, without even mentioning a loaded one.

sounds like a good father to me

a lot of things my dad just never explained it was a learn as you go other than not pointing a gun at any one was about it for gun safety

as for my sons I did not want to do them that way

i started early on about safety and pointing and handling. being careful

I bought them both a dasy bb gun when they were very young I spent a few days the back yard with them teaching them about keeping the finger off the bang switch only point at what you want to shoot and treat all guns as loaded all the time the good habits

I came home from work one day noticed several windows in the old barn on the place had been shot up these were old at least 1/2" maybe 5/8" thick glass panes just full of BB holes and hit marks 😣

so I called them both over ask why of all the things we have and you can get to shoot at you picked the windows and who shot first . I took the bb guns for a time and also applied the old training method passed down thru my family AKA as a swat on the butt to get attention.

they behaved after that and later on I bought both of them a ruger 10-22 and never had another window or non destinated item shot 😁
