Way up here in New York State on the Vermont border, mail deliveries have become intermittent. I live in a small village and haven't received mail since last Friday. I finally stop at the Post Office and I was told they are short handed. My niece works in the front office in Albany...she told me they were telling staff they will have to take off three weeks with no pay. I know they pizz away money, but are they that broke?

Judy retired from USPS and still has a lot of contact with a few of the current workers but she hasn't heard anything about this. Since most postal employees are union, I'm not sure how a mandatory leave without pay would go over with the workers. Not saying your niece is wrong but there must be more to the story. Of course the way the post office has been going downhill for the last decade or so, ever since the politicians took an active interest, nothing surprises me. Bob

Gah......I ship 100-200 packages a day, mostly with USPS. More and more, UPS is the better deal. USPS is ran by idiots. It is infuriating to see these 10%+ increases EVERY year, and the service has gone to CRAP.
The people at the top are completely clueless.

Try to understand that there are different levels of employment within USPS. The low end is PTF(part time flexible) and really aren't assured of steady work. If budget gets tight, full time employees will work their hours and that's it. No flex clerks or carriers to pick up the slack.
Well, I bad mouthed them and now I had sold a set of Pre 64 type big wheel scope rings and the guy that received them showed me picks and they were literally smashed to pieces. Scope rings destroyed by USPS. I had in padded 8"x4" mailing letter with cardboard on front and back and they are in 8 pieces. Karma got me --again.
Looks like a mail truck ran over them.

Same here in rural Colorado. We get mail 4 times a week, sometimes only 3 times. A few weeks ago when our roads were being redone, they stopped delivering all together for over a week, yet FedEx, UPS, and Amazon managed to keep right on delivering.
The USPS need a new stamp and increase in price for such.
I heard a rumor that China is thinking about cloning the USPS. (since they are buying lots of real estate in the USA also)
We liked how the Post Office is run so much we let the same people take over healthcare.
Several rural routes here have been cancelled W/O notice. When folks started to inquire they were told there are no carriers to deliver the mail and it is being held at the Post Office. However, the post office will only hold for a short while due to space. They suggest a person get a P.O.Box but there is very limited supply, and no room to add more.

It is real difficult to hire rural carriers here too. It will probably only get tougher since UPS drivers now can make $140,000. Why would anyone want to work for the post office for a fraction of that? My thoughts are to raise the postage to a buck, give the employees a raise and attract some good people. In today's economy, being able to send a letter across the country for a buck is still a helluva bargain. Bob
The problem is that big brother runs it.....period. Make it private, it will be competitive, the price will go down and service will get better. Look at Amtrak, you know, the train thingy where old poopy pants rode for 13,000,000,000,000,000 or so miles.
Wife's grandfather was a retired, uniformed mail carrier in Oakland,Ca. climbing the hills and steps all day, every day. If he saw what it is today,,,
Sub carriers are hard to get here. I have noticed a alternate that also is an equipment maintenance person.
He delivers one day a week to give the other alternate a break as P O does not like to pay overtime. He uses his Chev. service truck with a big air compressor mounted in the back. Sometimes they split the route and the Postmaster carries part of it.
I retired almost 8 years ago and the USPS started right down the tubes, coincidence ?

I retired from USPS in 2019. I got a letter from them offering $20/HR to come back and work over the holiday period. This arrangement would also have no effect on my pension. I thought about it but just can't get motivated to do it. From what I'm told, there's very little actual mail anymore. Most of what they deliver is parcels. When I started in 1985, long before online shopping, I'd only have a few packages a day. I'd also have at least 6 feet of letter size mail to sort on any given day and some days 8 feet or more. The USPS wasn't ready for the amount of parcels that they have now. Driving up people's driveway, getting out, carrying parcels to the door takes much more time than just flinging a handful of mail in a mailbox and driving away.
We have good mail service here in the NC mountains. No complaints.
Even though I criticize the postal service every chance I get 😊, I'll admit there's no way I'd do or could do that job everyday, I'd go bonkers dealing with all the mail and packages they have to handle but will stand by my saying the service definitely isn't what it use to be....but then again as in most all industries leadership is AWOL.

I see the mailmen loading up their cars at the PO, and it mostly is Amazon packages.
Fifteen years ago the computer was about to destroy the Post Office. Email had almost completely replaced first class mail, which was the main source of income for the PO.
But, Amazon to the rescue! Fifteen years ago Amazon exploded onto the scene, with many more packages than UPS could handle. So the mailmen began delivering for Amazon, which is run entirely off of computers, Iphones being a type of computer.
Computers destroy the Post Office, computers save the Post Office.
Their tracking system is useless.

We've lived here since 2001 and had 3 different ladies deliver our mail. Every one of them have been friendly, courteous, and helpful. I couldn't ask for any better service.

From its inception the Post Office was intended to be a government service to citizens. Somewhere along the way it was decided that service to citizens was not really needed, what was needed was another government income stream, so the PO was ended and USPS was created. That income stream has yet to start flowing. Most of what they deliver is junk mail and Amazon packages at a cut rate.
I have always called it the Postal Orifice because it is a hole into which things disappear.
l still write paper checks for my bills. Been doing it since 1965. lf possible, l pay my bills locally. l REFUSE to let anyone debit my account. Sadly, it seems the Post Office is a reflection of the Fed Gov't. Not good. Not good at all😶
Bubba Jr, Dad lived in Kents Store, Fluvanna County, Virginia a very Rural area. He had the same carrier for i guess the last 15 years or so of his life. Her name was Carol and i think a Angel sent from Heaven. She often brought my dad some eggs from her farm and did so many nice things for dad. If he was sick and could not get out she would bring him the paper and a few groceries. Near the end of dads life for a few years she walked 100 yds and came to back door where dad was sitting in sun room. Often she would sit for a while and cheer dad up.
One day hot air balloon came over and i had a large print made and framed for Carol that they took from balloon. After Dad's funeral I took Carol to my truck and handed her the picture that I had framed for her. She was overwhelmed and then I told her something Dad had made me promise not to tell her while he was still alive."My Dad has named you in his Will."
Carol, was a USPS letter carrier in Kents Store, Virginia and was the real deal. I am sure that God has a special place for her in Heaven. ----------------------------Ray

A good letter carrier is a blessing.
Growing up we had the same man for 20+ years. When he passed years later, his wife didn't understand why there were so many people at his wake. They were friends (not customers) from his route.
We had several incidents where the letter carrier saved lives. They noticed that the mail wasn't picked up & investigated. Finding the resident disabled they called the PD for a medical response.
For the last couple of years,we may or may not get our mail.I didn't know it was a widespread problem.
There are signs up in every little town around here looking for mail carriers...
We recently had a new carrier. On her first day, I had to show her where our neighbor's box was located. As we walked over, I told her this was my first time as a mail escort.
