Found this article in the news. Old snipers nest found from 1943. If that rifle could talk. Oakie

Somewhere in an unidentified waterway in SE Asia, there's the remains of an M-40 minus the bolt. It was a choice between carrying the rifle and being caught or pulling the bolt and ditching the rifle to improve chances of getting away. Stuff happens.
What rifle is that?
Model 91/30 PU sniper in 7.62x54R
My gosh what a find!! Amazing.
Probably a skeleton down below under the dirt. Amazing!!
This - but mine is in a little better shape:
And I also have a PSL - but it is not as accurate as the Mosin.

The article didn't say. I'm assuming they found the gun laying on the ground and propped it up, as those trees would have been a lot bigger, 80 years later.

Good catch and excellent observation.
I once 'found' an axe head stuck in a large, dead tree trunk. Handle apparently broke off and the head left stuck in the tree with 5-6" of new growth covering it. Unfortunately, I 'found' the axe head with my chainsaw totally destroying the chain.
Trigger guard looks awfully low compared to the magazine for most/all rifles of the time, or is that just the decay?
Decades of weather. Love to have found that thing.
