Little Red

Lady Rae Lady Rae Member Posts: 2,343 ✭✭✭✭

I have a old horse her name is Little Red. She's a rescue. Anyway could you say a prayer for her? And me? Not sure if it colic or if she's sick. I'm walking her now. But waiting out the rain till I can get my rain coat.

Banamine couple cc’s under the tongue if you can’t mainline, I’m also partial to drenching one with warm mineral oil or vegetable oil if nothing else is available, heck I’ve even used pesto bismal in the hills.

keep it walking, until it starts passing gas and hopefully has a bowel movement or two.

DO NOT LET IT LIE DOWN AND ROLL, you might have to kick it in the belly to make it stand up. You might think it’s mean, but better than the alternative. It only takes one roll to twist a gut, if it’s actually a colic or impaction, and then it’s game over if you can’t get a surgery done. $5k and and not a guarantee they will live through it.

if you make it through it, check its manure for texture. If it is very coarse and not ground up fine, you likely may need to get the teeth floated, a pretty common thing in aged horses .

I don’t envy your predicament, but it’s an inevitability of owning equines.

being an aged horse, you might get some DAC oil, and put a cup or two on the feed, if you are feeding dry feed, it helps lube them up and again vegetable oil will work (not corn oil) if you can’t find DAC oil.

    Hope Little Red pulls through.

If you have powered bute or pill form that you can crush, mix into a paste with Karo syrup to make it more palatable and they’ll take it better .

@dpmule I mixed the bute with a little olive oil and pancake syrup and put it in a big syringe... That's what dad had in the barn. She's doing better 🙏❤️🙏❤️

About 5 years ago I was looking for an older horse I could ride... Our others are shady characters. Anyway my friend rescued Little Red... Her lady had died and the husband wasn't feeding her... There was a post on Facebook that said PLEASE HELP THESE HORSES. She has done so much for me in my riding skills ect. Also she helped me take my first surgery in stride. As of right this minute I'm sitting in the car watching Little Red graze on the lane. The Lord is good ❤️

I am caring for three aging horses; Teddy is 24, Copper is 27, and Murphy is 33. Teddy has lived with me for 15 years; the other two for 23 and 22 years. Old horses are expensive and time consuming but when I take on an animal, it's a life-time commitment--mine or theirs. (I'll be 86 next Saturday so it looks like it might be my life-time.) Senior horse feed is $26 a 50 lb. bag and the two oldest horses need 15 lb. a day and, of course, they have to be fed separately three times a day so I have to be here for that. Hay and straw has to be handled: Teddy has an eye problem so has to go the vet: The guy is going to be here tomorrow to trim their feet. But it's been worth it. I still ride once in a while. My wife comes out to the barn with me in the evening and likes to clean their stalls while I do the transferring and feeding.

So, Lady Rae, I know how you feel when your horse is sick and I'm glad Little Red came through.

Thank you so much @Ambrose we have 4 older horses. Abu, the Fairy Queen , Little Red and Manny. Rae Shell Manny's half sister is the young one of the family... Mostly all rescues. One year it was pouring rain here and going to flood, old Abu was colicy and our truck was in the shop I called my neighbor and had him pick us up on the main road and take us to the fairgrounds arena where I walked Bu until neither of us could walk one more step at about midnight. We crossed the bridge with the Eel at 22 feet. My dad and I got back over before the bridge closed and the river went. My neighbors brother came to check on his wife's horse and found Bu in the arena and found a open stall and gave him water ( he knew who he was because of his brother)

I'm glad you are still living life taking care of your horses ❤️
