Veterans Day-Past Generations

Growing up in the era many of us did,with our dads and most of our friends dad being WW 2 veterans seems we all knew a hero that never thought of themselves as such.Like the guy that worked at the grocery store that earned a Navy Cross in the Pacific,or your dads fishing buddy that earned a Silver Star during the battle of the bulge.Untold many Purple Hearts.Most of these guys never spoke of what happened they would just say,I was in the Army or Navy or Marines and that was the end of the story. Medals earned or not,these were a special generation of men and women that we owe a debt that can never be re-paid.

I disagree with only one thing you said, sir.
The way current generations can "pay it back" is to raise their hands, take that oath, and join the brotherhood.
It makes you wonder how history will judge the boomers.
My dad and everyone in are neighbor hood were veterans of WW2 it seemed like, all branches of the service
Can’t imagine taking off from a carrier back then, flying 200, 300 miles out turning around and trying to find the carrier again, the whole time the carrier kept moving to a different location. No NDB, VOR or GPS, all done by dead reckoning over the water.
The taking of islands one by one on a head on assault occupied by a very tenacious foe like the Japanese. The liberation of Europe occupied by a very formidable foe like the Germans on such a large scale. It’s safe to say they were a generation unto their own.
Every generation has their war, and men and women from all backgrounds sacrifice and rise to the occasion. Not all wars/conflicts are popular, and some are not as “glorious” as others, even if necessary. However, all members (of every generation) who have served our country have my thanks and admiration…..in equal share. They are all the “greatest.”

Small town, where my Dad grew up there is a Memorial. From WW one to Present.
There are 900 names on the Granite that served over the years. Many were Brothers that went off together during WW 2. All from a small town of only 2,100 residents.

My great Uncle was the only one that talked about the war (WW1) Chasing the Germans . Uncle Was in WW2 in Europe, and Cousin was drastically changed from Vietnam . Dad served in Alaska during Korea.
All those are gone now.
Spent the Weekend at the VFW with My Veterans, no stories but comradeship. Always there if they need a hand or two.
I live the Rural part of KY where there are some values still left.
Great Uncle Franks 2nd wife threw out all his stuff when he died. At least he thought ahead and left some to my Uncle. I now have his WW1 USMC 1911 he carried. I often get it down and go over the times with him when I was just a Kid.
My 28 year old nephew just enlisted into the US Navy. His dad, (my kid brother) is USN Retired. Nephew is also a journeyman electrician. He got quite a fine schooling deal as well as a 25,000 dollar bonus when he gets done with his training. Will get a great rating with fast advancement. Leaving for Great Lakes Boot just after the Thanksgiving holiday. Our family is very proud of that young man!!
I wouldn't wanna be in the modern military with the required injections, and as I've heard recent stories about them teaching anything but warfare, and usually things people don't need to learn even in peacetime. A local militia on the other hand, in the country founded on the idea of the citizen-soldier.....that I would be interested in.
No shame in wanting to defend this country. If the internal conflict can be resolved peacefully, I'm all for it, and still hope and pray that's the case. But there's always threats from outside, and with those threats leaking in, it's nice to be prepared just in case, right?

Perhaps. But notice I never said anything about not respecting those who sign up with an honest desire to serve even today, because I do have that respect. It just isn't the right choice for me with all that's going on.
