Browning Auto-5 recoil spring length

If you have an older Auto-5 and a newer (original) Auto-5, can you compare the recoil spring lengths for me? Comparing the springs in a 1953 and 1963 shows the same length. Comparing those to a 1979 shows the newer with the recoil spring an inch longer when not under compression.

I have one from the 40s, I know the new spring I bought was way longer than the old worn out spring.
Same here, Mike. It was you that suggested I tame my 70 year old A-5's recoil with a new spring kit and the new springs were over an inch longer than the originals I replaced. FWIW: the new springs tamed that recoil nicely.

Amazing what a new spring kit will do for a well-used Auto 5. Should be good for another 70 years. Love the Humpback, just wish the dang thing were a tad lighter.
Great, glad it worked out for you! Just remeber to swap the bushings around if you are shooting higher powered rounds and that gun will last several peoples lifetimes!
