Hasn't made the local news yet.
I got a list of 20 highest foreign land ownership states. MO is pretty high on the list. My home county and a couple of bordering counties have considerable Chinese ownership(Smithfield) which is all ag related-- land or pork processing. Something else to consider: some of the other states reporting significant foreign land ownership involved gas/oil leases-not ag land.
Arkansas passed laws proscribing foreign ownership of land & real property last year and yes passing has pissed some off.
For the likes of me, can understand why non-citizens and foreign governments especially those of our enemies are allowed to buy American land in the first place, but then "Follow the Money" and there lies the answer.
Hypothetically our enemies, could buy a considerable amount section of land and do as they like with it. We are already coping with a large scale invasion along our Southern border orchestrated by Joe Biden.
Other than the eavesdropping and/or snooping of military bases from nearby, I don't see 'land ownership' as being the big issue. As long as the foreign entities are paying taxes and not using the land for illegal activities, we just keep an eye on what they do and not worry.
The reason: If the US decides foreign ownership is a big security or whatever risk, we just tell those foreign landowners they no longer own that land and TAKE IT BACK. What are they going to do, cry to Mommy that the big mean bully whose jelly beans they were holding took them back?
'I am more concerned about foreign entities buying politicians and/or their family members and gaining control of those politicians.'
Well, that's already happening at every level-especially in the White House the past 3 1/2 years.
'what prevents that foreign interest from buying controlling interest in an American company and using that company to buy up acreage?'
Like Smithfield Pork? China bought out the entire operation that began as Premium Standard Farms in north MO 25 years ago. The land is listed under 'foreign ownership or control'.
Yep!!........tic/tok......tic/tok....🧐🤔
I quit buying Smithfield products some years ago after learning they were China owned. That is about the quickest way a single citizen can do much about foreign ownership.
Waiting around for our politicians to do something........I will not live long enough!
I just think it's wrong on all sides... What happens when it's time to export? What about if we went to war with China but they owned millions of acres of good crop growing land? Will they starve the American people?
"Independence Now, Independence Forever."
John Adams
I think if we went to war, we would just take the land back, not much they could do.... I would be more worried they might contaminate the soil so we couldn't use it
I don't see the big deal. They could always buy land through a shell corporation.
Not sure I like a Governor having that much power, either.

At the local level, that land would be farmed by someone regardless of ownership(unfortunately the WHO would probably be determined by the largest bribe offered to county officials).
An alternate scenario is: the land would be taken over by the Federal government and end result is questionable but sooner or later back into production.
In the case of Smithfield, the local processing plant would shut down leaving a lot of pork to be dealt with locally. The feed would run out quickly and ?? happens next. Smithfield previously was an example of vertical expansion--owning the product from insemination to point of sale. This has changed to contract buying of ready to process hogs through delivery to point of purchase or further processing(all the way to China in some cases).
Even in this upside down administration, I can't see allowing an enemy of the state to continue doing business within the US.
