This is C&P'd from the National Weather Service. We'll see how close they come to getting it right. They'd been telling us the last two days would have 30 to 36 MPH winds with 50 MPH gusts. The highest we recorded here was only 18. I'm really hoping they miss their numbers. Those wind chill figures might mean I'll need to put on more than a light jacket when I go out to feed!

Snow. Widespread blowing snow, mainly after 11am. Temperature falling to around -8 by 5pm. Wind chill values as low as -35. Blustery, with a north northeast wind 17 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.
Thursday Night
Snow likely, mainly before 11pm. Widespread blowing snow, mainly before 5am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around -25. Wind chill values as low as -53. Blustery, with a north northeast wind 21 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Areas of blowing snow before 8am. Partly sunny and cold, with a high near -16. Wind chill values as low as -55. Blustery, with a north wind 18 to 23 mph decreasing to 7 to 12 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 32 mph.

We're forecast to get the same weather. Low temps in the teens highs below freezing, which is cold for the coast.
I still hold to the belief that they can only accurately predict weather within 4 hours of arrival, and in some cases 8 hours.
I explain my feeling of accuracy as such. If you throw a ball at say a paper plate from 50 foot away, and can only come within 8 inches of that plate, that is as accurate as you get. I’m not saying that they can’t ever hit the plate, because sometimes the prediction is spot on. The only thing that is predictable about the weather is it’s unpredictable.
Wind chill numbers are guesses based on bad science. I put exactly zero stock in them. But if our wind weather was any indication, you should get some nice sustained winds soon.

Well, no. Wind chill is based at least in part on wet bulb thermometer readings. It takes into account the cooling factor of evaporation. That's not bad science.
We have snow and snow squalls forecast through Monday evening in northern Utah. We could get a foot or so total by then down here in the valley, several times that up high. Temps are a bit below average with highs of about 28 each day. Not terrible.
Um, no. That's not how it's tabulated. They used 12 guys to determine how fast heat transferred from various parts of their body:
They didn't even us a spherical cow approximation.

I would keep the light jacket and just eat in if I were you! Dont think there is a jacket big enough for me to go out in that, if there was......the wind would * away and yall would swear I was another chinese spy ballon!

I learned many years ago on how to over come the wind chill factor in the winter time. I wear clothes. It’s the same with the heat index, they don’t take into account the breeze on your skin.
If I would see someone out side in shorts and no shirt when 10° below I think he has more problems than wind chill. Lol
I've got a good set of insulated bib overalls and a heavy coat made by Carhartt. They're their 'Extreme' series and I'll tell ya what, I came in this morning and was sweatin' a bit! Granted, it was a still a whole 2 degrees out.
Seriously, if you need good cold weather gear the Carhartt Extreme series is pretty darn good.
Yeah, it's too bad I will never buy from Carhartt again.

I got these before they pulled their wang flu crap. I'm torn on whether I'll buy from them again. I did write 'em a nasty-gram for all the good that might do.
And here I was bemoaning the lows being slightly sub zero here in southern Missouri. On the other hand going from near 60 today to anywhere from -1 to -6 on Monday /Tuesday is a little bit extreme.
Don't mind snow, don't want ice. We're supposed to get both next week.

It is here now. 11 below with out wind chill.
We only got down to -18 last night and no wind, thank God. That beats the heck out of the predicted -25 and high winds!
I'm not so worried for myself, but this can sure be tough on the livestock. I had to bust the ice off of the surface in the heated water trough last night. Inside the cabinet it's 60 degrees but we still got almost 3/4" of ice on the surface that had to be busted up and skimmed off. That'll be the first thing I check on this morning.

it's all the weather guessers can talk about. How cold it is can be different dependent on what you have to do outside.
I typically spend 4-6 hours out doors each day during winter. If the temp is below zero, not so much.
Those who spend 5 minutes outside aren't going to notice below zero as much???
Just dipped down to -20. Still no wind, though, so that's good!

It's 25° this morning. That's getting kind of cold for around here. I brought the hummingbird feeder in last night. Need to put it back out soon as dawn will be breaking.

When I was a kid, I lost so many mittens that my mom started safety pinning them to my coat sleeves. I also had plastic bread bags lining the inside of my boots. I would lose the bread bags but never lost another mitten.
Talking about winter stories, I was one of those born down the line of many siblings. Hand-me-downs were quite the thing back then. The only pair of ice skates that fit me when I was around 9 or 10 were a pair of white skates that belonged to an older sister. No fun loving 10 year old would be caught dead wearing white skates!!!!!
So, my dad got out the Kiwi black shoe polish and wa la.......a pair of PURPLE skates were born!
I did catch a lot of flack but not as bad as if they had been left white!
Mom saved bread bags all the time . There was always an ample supply come winter. With 5 head of children on a farmers income ,they were a necessity.

Did a jaunt to town. It was 54 degrees. Rain had quit and with snow/ice coming I decided goats needed hay. Also needed fresh straw for the dog house and chicken coop. Filled up the two 5 gallon gas cans for the generator in case the power goes out.
Grabbed some portable propane bottles for the Big Buddy heater as back up. Also, picked up some spare heat lamp bulbs, and a new extension cord to run to the lamp under the house to keep pipes warm.
Dog house is 4'x8', with a solid floor and it sits on my deck. Three outside dogs share it so they should be warm inside it. It has a windbreak across the opening made out of an old rubber backed curtain.
Chicken coops are inside the barn so they are out of the wind and weather. Goats are snugged into the barn as well.
Anyway, by the time I got home around 4 pm, it was 25° and the wind was blowing at about 35 mph.
Put on my insulated bibs and coat to spread the straw and put the hay in the shed. Also had a bunch of groceries to bring inside. By the time I got it all done I was sweating.
But I'm about as prepared as i can be, come what may.

Woke up this morning to -35. Brrrr! Made the rounds inside and everything looks good. No pipe issues anywhere and all heat sources are working as designed.
One of the interesting things that happens when it gets this cold is the buildings adjusting to the temperature. Every now and then there'll be a loud 'POP' from some point in framing. The aluminum screen doors all fit quite a bit looser than they did.
@Gunnut358 that's no joke! It's 35 degrees warmer in my freezers than it is outside.
@NeoBlackdog That popping sound you hear are the nails in the frame work contracting because of the cold.
Yesterday and the day before I plowed snow up around the house and the 900 foot lane up to the house. With the wind it’s all drifting back in again. I won’t be doing it again until the wind dies down, I don’t have a cab on the tractor.
Makes one wonder how the settlers done it, coming across the prairie building a cabin and surviving the winters. I’m pretty sure I would have left my asp in Boston.
This was obviously at 6:31 this morning. About 7:00 AM we lost power and internet and just got it back. We've got an automatic generator, but at -36 it drained the battery before it did it's automatic start thing. I had to pull one of the boat batteries that I keep on a maintainer in the shop and jump the generator to get it going. Then I had to jump the tractor to get it goin' so I could feed everybody. Been a busy and nippy morning! We're clear up to -19 now! Plumb balmy...
I don't envy you at all @NeoBlackdog or any of you folks up North... It is about 57F outside right now, but the "Artic blast" is supposed to come through later this evening and expected to be 10F by Monday before warming again to the low 40's by Wednesday... Our normal low for this time of year is usually around 30F so I won't be doing much outside for the next couple days except to check on the critters and make sure heat lamps are working in the wellhouse and coop. I know about that popping sound since my home is metal framed and it does it when the temps change, used to scare the heck out of me when I first built it 15 years or so ago, now I hardly even notice it. Stay safe out there!
Couple things you can do for your tractor or pickup.
in these temps, I always slip a chunk of cardboard in front the radiator, usually the flat from a case of soup or beer flat, Just remember to take out in the spring . Believe it will make a difference driving around at -30/40. You can even to this for your gasoline car or pickup.

Made it home Friday night, just in time to enjoy this round of winter.
warmedup to zero in the night as a small system moved in and give us 4” inches of fresh.
As to the sand, morning temps of the last week in mid/ high 30’s, local boys freezing and everyone’s pickups gelling up but mine, because I add 1.5 liters of gasoline to my tank each time before I fill up. The fuel we get is more like bunker fuel for ships. Anything below 40 and it starts to thicken.
