$100 to ship a pistol typical?

wewsnuwewsnu Member Posts: 2

Good day,

Sorry, I'm new to this. I've purchased items here before but never anything that requires FFL. I purchased a handgun and am surprised to see $50 shipping and $50 handling costs suddenly. This is more than the gun cost, why does it cost so much to ship a 3lb item? Even insured well I'd expect half that at most.

The only mention in the sale's listing is: "Buyer pays actual shipping costs for the following option(s): Ground"

Being new, I'd like to know if such a mark-up is standard and what all this covers if I'm already paying my local FFL gentleman his $20.

Thank you for your input, have a blessed day.

I already have. But to get back on topic, I'm sorry for your trouble. Next time, contact the seller and ask him to be specific as to actual shipping costs before bidding. Please don't let this sour you on doing business on Gunbroker. The overwhelming majority of sellers are reasonable on shipping costs.

You can also file a report with auction support.

every one is going to tell you that you should have asked questions before you bid , and

any time you see ""Buyer pays actual shipping costs for the following option(s): Ground"" you need to use the ask seller what the charges are going to be to your FFL ,

as to your question, no it doesn't cost $100 to ship a small handgun , a dealer should be able to ship that USPS priority mail to just about any place for $20 give or take a few dollars

is there any thing you can do now , probably not , If you refuse to pay that crazy shipping you will most likey get negative feedback posted by the seller or you could try asking the seller to cancel the sell but that probably won't go anywhere , gunbroker really can't help because the seller has the right to ask what ever they want to for s&h it's up to the buyer to find out what S&H is before they bid and/or change their mind and not bid at all

Right. This seller needs to be outed, but not on this forum. The feedback option is the best avenue.

handling is not actual costs. Actual cost is what you paid the shipper. If it were $5 bucks I d say pay him. I always specify a cost on my listings and ask a seller before bidding.

$50 shipping for a handgun is obviously to high- and “ handling” $50? For a $76 is blatant overcharge- but you kind of hooked now with the purchase. As above go with sellers who put the charges up front. IMO

that’s crazy….heck no, there is no way I’d pay that nonsense. I’d turn them into Gunbroker for being shady…..if you bought a super expensive thing or something that requires extra bulky packaging….then maybe a high shipping charge. This kind of crap will get them tossed off the website. Turn them in…..that’s horrible

I JUST PURCHASED A PISTOL FROM ONE OF THE SELLERS HERE, SHIPPING WAS $25.00 AND TAXES/FEES (GUN BROKERS 'CUT') $18.02 FOR A TOTAL OF $43.02 (PLUS THE PURCHASE PRICE).

What I have noticed on eBay is they know there item is more than it selling for so they charge over kill on the shipping.

I can't help but ask wewsnu, but what kind of gun did you buy for less than $76.00?

It's too late for me, save yourself.

Shipping charges are a pain…..we have a guy that his only job is shipping, so that is a cost of shipping….the boxes I order cost me around $5,000 per year…..then the packing is another $500 every two weeks….THEN you have the shipping label. The label is all anyone thinks I should charge for…..shipping is not just a label. I'm guessing that nobody really realizes how much "shipping" actually costs.

Its not what you think it is for sure.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I'll message the seller first, inquiring how it could possibly cost so much for actual shipping before sending any money. The seller has no feedback so perhaps he's as confused as me. I doubt he was expecting only $75 for a hipoint 40 but perhaps it's a mistake...

Thank you all for your input, God bless.

I never ever bid on an item with hidden shipping costs! Too easy to contact a seller to ask.

Ask for receipt for shipping since it says actual shipping costs.

I have a list of people that I ran across that do this junk and I won't bid on their stuff. I SOOOOO wish that GB had an "ignore seller" function that would exclude sellers on that list from any notifications and search results. That would also eliminate those keyword spammers.

Personally, I think $75. for a Highpoint is extravagant .

But at least It's worth every penny you paid for it.

PS the seller is screwing you on shipping and especially the "handling fee".
