Speeding ticket.....sent by mail.....given to me by a CAMERA....pure bullcrap

Locust ForkLocust Fork Member Posts: 31,994 ✭✭✭✭

I hate what our society has become.

If you are a slug, no tag on your car, one headlight, no insurance, you are free to roam the planet freely….no worry at all that anything might happen to ruin your day.

If you are going 50 in a 40mph zone on Center Point Parkway in Alabama…you'll get a ticket in the mail with a picture of your car. They say its not going to add points to your license, but the fine is $150 with the "fees" added for paying online.

I swear, I'm tempted to mail this to the mayor with a note saying exactly what I feel they need to hear. That little part of Alabama has become a dangerous area….I'm sure they will take my "fine" and turn things around.

Yep, and about 90% of that $150 goes straight in the contractor's pocket.

They have a few of these in our area. Fighting one of the camera tickets is near impossible from what I understand, and they threaten that if you DO fight it and lose, they then WILL count the points against your license. Whole thing is just a big scam.

Every time I see one, I have a mind to come back at night with some black spray paint and close their little spying eyes.

That happened to the wife almost three years ago . She was going through Cedar Rapids Iowa. Picture of the car, license plates and where to send the money. First ticket in her life according to her. She said she was just keeping up with traffic. I seen the other day on the news that Iowa is trying to pass a law that only if your over 10 mph of the speed limit will they send out a ticket.

There's a great picture of me flipping off a red-light camera as I got stuck behind another car that kept me from getting out of the line of sight. It was well worth the fine just to have that photo!

Pay up. The Matrix demands it.

got one of those in St. Louis years ago Showed me running a red light. Fact is I I know I didn’t. But the “camera” showed I did. Talked with local sheriff said if I don’t they will put in on my record and still pay. Short story long, St. Louis got enough people to protest this as it turned out that the pictures were doctored and the company was reaping lots of cash! It was a total scam and the city had them stop.

They might just as well raise the speed limit and then harshly enforce the new one.

  • AlpineAlpine Member Posts: 15,092 ✭✭✭✭

Red light cameras are a revenue generators. They can be easily defeated by demanding the person issuing the ticket appear in court as demanded by the Constitution. Once they see the costs climb the cameras disappear. It is not worth the cost.

I have never gotten a ticket from a speed camera, but if I did, I WOULD spray paint that sucker. Over and over. If you can't face your accuser in court, then I'm not paying. :)

Have heard from other sources in addition to Alpine that a red light camera ticket can be defeated in court if you have the time and energy to do so.

I guess that's one of the few things I have in common with you guys here; I'm not fond of these "automated nannies" either. An attempt was made here in PR to install red light cameras but they were killed almost immediately by a hurricane and were never repaired. So there's that.

There are ways to make your license plate invisible to cameras. Just saying.

No points on your license . . . because they can't prove it was you driving the car?

  • JunkballerJunkballer Member Posts: 9,280 ✭✭✭✭

Around here the ticket goes to the one who's name is on the registration regardless of who's driving……😡. It's then up to you to find the culprit responsible for payment of the fine. Good luck on any reimbursement 🙄

Can't prove who was driving and also you are not able to confront your accusers in court. just takes some effort on your part

    break the law pay up

  • yonsonyonson Member Posts: 940 ✭✭✭

The City of Minneapolis set up cameras in the early 2000s. In 2007, the MN Supreme Court struck down the program as it conflicted with State law because the images couldn't confirm who was driving. 2.6 million dollars was refunded to 15,000 drivers. Now the city wants to reinstate the program but image issues and the law still remain to be overcome.

When CR initially installed the cameras they said they would only ticket drivers going 12 mph over the posted limit and that it would never change. It was seen as a safety measure rather than a source of revenue. I guess things have changed.

I wish that were the case….that is my problem…..this area is full of people roaming the roads with no tag and they drive like they stole the car (probably did.) A friend of mine has a business in that area, it was broken into and his alarm was set off. He was on the phone with the police, watching the thugs wander around his store stealing things…..the police never came. They didn't bother even sending a car over. Its just a third world country after dark over there. Giving people a speeding ticket with a camera is the LAST thing that area needs in the list of "fix this mess" for sure.

Send it back to them telling them you have no idea who might have been operating your car and that they need to provide some proof it was you, or drop the case.

Low hanging fruit. Do/enforce the easy stuff. A "busy" daily report will show you did some work and explain why you did not have time to do "everything".

  • Locust ForkLocust Fork Member Posts: 31,994 ✭✭✭✭

I don't think anything will happen if I don't pay it….but I do admit that this is my car, going over the speed limit so I am paying the fine. My pet peeve with this thing is that there is so much going on in that exact spot that needs to be addressed. So many of my friends who grew up near this area REFUSE to go in that direction because they feel it is dangerous. I'm not going back. Its just going to run off the last of the people that actually have car tags. I'm one of the slower drivers. If you wanted to keep up with traffic they run 60 up the parkway all day long.

Yes, I'm a fast driver. On highways I fight to keep it under +10.

I apologize, but this popped up and I couldn't resist.

If you insist on paying the fine, do it in pennies, and contained in something really inconvenient like Saran Wrap, preferably in multiple layers. Thick enough that they need bolt cutters to open it.

  • JunkballerJunkballer Member Posts: 9,280 ✭✭✭✭

Yes, pay it and walk out, don't lolly-gag around, leave it to them to hassle with……😅. Gunnut358, I love that idea 👍️

Make sure you give them too many pennies. That way they might have to write you a refund check.

    They won't . . . but they should.

  • jltrentjltrent Member Posts: 9,330 ✭✭✭✭

A local town has them at every light an handed out over 13k tickets in one year. I go to a different town now.

  • GrasshopperGrasshopper Member Posts: 16,980 ✭✭✭✭

Pennies. that happened some years ago and the guy that did it eventually had to do it with other form of payment. Best I remember some lawsuit made him do it with other monies.

It would not make any difference anyway IF they did accept it because you are hurting the people who work where collections are made not the entity itself. IMO. only.
