…with inguinal hernia repair in terms of recovery?

Comments

I had surgery for Bi-Lateral inguinal hernias in January. It was done robotically through three small incisions and left very small (almost invisible) scarring.

Was sore for a couple days, and on a 20lb lifting restriction for about six weeks. They gave me some pain killers, and I think I took two or three the first couple days, and then switched to regular tylenol. Feel good as new now.

    I have had two

both open up versions 5 or 6" scar I I knew right away I picked up a long block 454 chevy engine by my self and lifter it wrong OUCH

2nd one some years later had torn thru the old area as there was nothing left to sew it back to my bone with first time and it did not heal well any way not the best feeling

follow the doctors orders something I did not do after any surgery I have had and regret it

I went back to work 3 days after the surgery ( I was young and dumb ) and in pain LOL

2nd one I took off a couple weeks

you will be fine with in a few days you will be doing Ok as for how long before your back to normal I will say every one is different it was almost a year I was completly pain fee for me on the first one

because I rushed back to work lifting and doing dumb things

second one maybe a a couple months total to all the pain to go away but was healed up way before that

after about 4 to 6 weeks I did what ever I wanted to no problem

compared to the open heart surgery I had its like a sprained ankle LOL and No I did not listed to the doc on it either and got a major butt chewing from him

I had a mesh repair done in 2011. Went to a birthday party the next night which was a mistake.

What ever you do, do not sneeze for couple of weeks.

I would HIGHLY suggest trying to find a surgeon that can do it laparoscopicly! The healing time is MUCH shorter and less painful. If thats not an option then so be it, but I would definitely ask!

It will hurt bad for about 3 or 4 days. Standing up straight will be near impossible in that time, and do NOT sneeze or laugh for a few days.....trust me! Open surgery will be the same, just more painful and more healing time due to the large incision.

I had laparoscopic, 3 tiny 1/4 to 1/2 inch incisions (1 left side, 1 right side, 1 inside belly button). BIL had open and my goodness. I asked where his baby was! Looked like a c-section, probably 12 inch incision. 🤢

I had surgery done for an inguinal hernia about 25 years ago. They used mesh and the surgeon had performed hundreds of them in the past.
You will be sore for a couple days, have the surgeon prescribe you pain medication and you will be alright. Third day I was up and around, just couldn’t lift over ten pounds for 2 or 3 weeks. Very routine surgery anymore, most always out patent surgery.

I've had 5 if I'm counting correctly. I have one right now ironically from the last surgery. It was done laparoscopic and the hernia is where one of the incision is. Do what the doctor says, be patient ,don't sneeze and if they have to shave down low, down there, it itches like heck when it starts to grow back.

I have inguinal hernia right now. GP told me at least 20 years ago it was there but never had swelling or pain. Had a little twinge once in a while but always assumed it was disc/low back problem. When I wake up its not there and after couple hours it pops out above crack where leg joins abdomen.

Went to Doc and he calls it small and if it starts to hurt real bad they will have to operate as that is only true fix. I guess he wants to hold off because no pain and maybe he figures I will die before I need operation! He examined me in prone position and not sure why he calls it small as it sticks out about size of egg if you cut egg in half length wise. He never mentioned Hernia belt but I was concerned that it would get worse with me punishing my body in Virginia with grass removal. It was a dumb thing to do, swinging big RedMax for hours on end, day after day.

I bought a Leader Medium Hernia belt and they did not even put instructions inside. Wasted a lot of time on internet trying to educate myself. Their web site is useless.

A lot of controversy out there about Hernia Belt. Lot of Docs say don't because can make Hernia worse and in some cases cuts off blood supply to tissue.. Some people that are into physical therapy and it is small say wear belt and gradually reduce it's use. Some are so bad they have to have emergency surgery because it effects bowel movement and can lead to gang green and death (strangulated).

I am in a real pickle with my property in Virginia and if I can't find some help pretty soon, i will probably go back to plugging away at the grass. I know it is dumb but I just don't know what else to do. I suppose after i drain pipes in Virginia I could take on operation if I must. On the other hand there goes my winter project (working on my 37 Winchesters). I tell you folks life is hard sometimes.———-Ray

I have not been there, but have had a stint put in. If it can possibly be done laproscopicaly, do that. If not be conservative in following the recovery instructions and ask about available PT.

This is going to upset some, but of around 10 acquaintances who have had mesh repair, perhaps one did not have problems & regrets. In the old days trusses worked quite well.

Mine was so long ago that it would be irrelevant today. Except for the do NOT sneeze part. I have a scar about 4" and still get the occasional twitch of discomfort from it.

Mine came from pulling Gs in jets. Hernia and hemorrhoids are the usual price to pay for that job. And back issues, which I now have.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

"Rant" I suppose. Tried on Leader Hernial Belt (Parent Company Cardinal) this morning. Very bad experience. When you pull small straps up and tighten on both sides it chafs inside of legs and is painful. I just can't imagine anyone exercising or doing any manual labor with one of these contraptions on.

Took it back to retail pharmacy this am that sells medical supplies. Fella refused to give me a credit. Showed him printing on box "100% guaranteed to satisfy or money back, return to retail store" Still he refused to give me a credit.

I explained to him that while my sweetheart was dying with Lung Cancer i purchased Transporter, Walker and Pottie Seat etc. from his store. I never returned any of it and my garage is full of it. Told him if you don't give me a credit, i will become your worst nightmare. Pharmacist to right said "Give him a credit" Case closed.

Any of you folks have a better brand/option? I plan to do nothing for time being unless hernia gets larger, turns color or starts to hurt bad.

I really hated to lose my patience but what could I do but crawl away with my tail tucked between my legs. ——————————————-Ray

Like Rocky , my surgery was in tge dark ages,1977. Back then, big incision ,lots of pain and weight restrictions . Be thankful things have progressed.Go ahead and have it fixed . Waiting will not make it better.

Mine is not bad right now. I honestly did not know that I had it. It was discovered on a CT scan which was done for another reason. Dr. said I could wait or get it fixed now. He said he may be able to do it no mesh as it is not terribly large. Needs to see it when he gets in there. As some have said, it won't get better on its own and I am fairly young, so I am going to have it repaired now. Hope its the right decision.

spent 3 weeks total in hospital march 26 cut me like a fish lots of antibiotics not new to hospital but this one sucked never know what they find when they get there

  • notnownotnow Member Posts: 1,851 ✭✭✭

My first two were in the early 70's. No mesh, 4 inch incision and staples to hold it closed. I didn't know the staples flatten out over a week and fall off on their own. I saw that and thought my guts were going to start falling out. The one I have now is right next to my belly button, right where an incision is from the last one. Every once in a while I'll feel a sharp tightness in my gut and it takes me a while to realize it's that hernia getting strangulated. I just go and lay down for a while and it goes away. I suppose I'll get it fixed someday. To me at this point, it's just routine. I go in the hospital, lay down, get up and pee and go home. Some pain but nothing I can't manage.
