How many amps are safe on #10 wire at 150 feet?
Comments
14 gauge is good for 15amps
12 gauge is good for 20amps
10 gauge is good for 30amps
A quick googly search says 30 amps.
DO NOT take that as the Gospel.
At the full 30 Amp load you will see about a 10 volt drop at 150 feet.
For lights, heat, etc. That's not bad. Motors may overheat depending on duty. Electronics will most likely not perform.
Horizonal or vertical? Don
What's the application? If going to an out bldg or such, I'd suggest running big enough wire to put in a sub panel. Then pull your 10 GA out of that.
diagonal….
It definitely depends upon the application, but also the type of wire and whether it will be in conduit, underground etc. The general safe answer is 30 amps, but it can go to 40 amps in the right combination of material, length and encapsulation and temperature.
When in doubt, use bigger wire.
Be careful there. Some 30 amp breakers won't accept #8 wire in their terminals.
I was considering putting a 120 V mini split in my work shop. From what I understand it will pull from 13 to 18 amps.
Yeah that's pushing right to the limits. I would run it off a 'Dedicated' 20 amp circuit from a sub panel.
Time for a pro to come in.
