Moving my guns & reloading supplies..

WarbirdsWarbirds Member Posts: 16,920 ✭✭✭✭

I am afraid my reloading set up has become some extensive, this time it might really become a problem to move.

This will be my sixth cross country move since joining the GB forums & as you can imagine, there’s always more guns and reloading stuff.

This time, my 3 boys are really starting to get big and as a first time event, we have 2 dogs.

I have a moving company but it’s the things they won’t move that are high value and well will take a ton of space.

I have hundreds of pounds of brass, & bullets, then of course powder & primers and everything else. & the problem is twofold. I just am always buying reloading stuff & I am a brass hound at the range so there’s lots of sorted (and not sorted) brass and open jugs of powder, etc.

I’m thinking of just offering it up locally but I know in a few months when the dust settles I will be kicking myself.

I know a I-Haul is an option but those a big targets for thieves in hotel parking lots along the way.

Any suggestions?

Maybe rent a van, or large suv. No idea what that cost, but its less conspicuous than a uhaul.

Or maybe a "pod"? You load it, they hual it. Again, no idea on the prices.

Drive straight through, with a bud along to trade off driving and napping.

Don't get rid of the reloading supplies. You will definitely regret it as you already know.

I like mike55's idea of a large SUV for the things you want to keep safe and under the radar.

When we moved from North Carolina to Colorado, we stayed in KOA cabins along the way. The campgrounds were well kept, the cabins were nice, and we felt safe staying there with a baby, two dogs, and two cars full of things that were irreplaceable or needed to be out of sight. Maybe that option works for you, too.

See if you can find a motel about midway that has indoor parking.

Pack it and haul it. See if one of your friend will "Fred" it (the dog from "Smokey And the Bandit") afterwards throw him on a plane if he's not flagged. If your kids are old enough to drive then take 4 hour shifts. Gatorade bottles make good pee bottles. Ram Jam "Black Betty" stuck on play with two liters of Code Red.

I was faced with a similar issue when we retired and moved out of Illinois. The moving company took care of all the household etc. I packed the important items and had to make sure all firearms were in cases, Ammo in a different place in case I got pulled over in Illinois on the way out….

I sold a lot of brass and reloading supplies and left my large safe with the house as getting out of the basement and the cost of what the moving company wanted was more than a new one cost when I got settled…

It was a stretch but we drove straight through and at least made it into the garage that night…. My biggest fear was getting into a wreck or running into some over-zealous official checking me over in case of a traffic stop.

I would have made the National news for sure back in the Obama years !!!!

The only time I have pulled a trailer with valuables, I choose a motel where I could park the trailer almost right by a back sliding door to the room…. I still did not sleep very well…

I wish you the best as you figure out what will work for you…..

i travel to a lot of different gun shows. My trailer is a car hauler. I have no stickers anywhere that would signify a gun dealer or owner. We never stay near the hall. Driving about a hour or more away. When i get to a major 4 star hotel. I request a room on the first floor facing the trailer out side the room. With the alarm on my truck an the trailer backed up to a stationary object. Tree telephone pole. Anything that can stop the tailgate from opening. All the hotels have someone on duty all night. Cameras all around. You should be safe.
