IT Problem

Looks like the upgrade had an issue and many companies including airlines were on hold. I'm comforted to know that transport sec. Peter Buttagig is on top of it.

If they were honest, Microsoft would rename Windows to "Blue Screen of Death" and be done with it.

Only an idiot would run Windows on a server. Heck, even Microsoft doesn't run Windows on their own servers. They run Linux. Honest.

I just talked to a family member who works for a large trucking cooperation. He said the outage took Petro and TA truck stops down and for several hours no fuel could be purchased at either place.. Strange how that was not reported on the news…

I understand with card usage that would/could happen but would they still take cash $'s for purchases……?

Too damn many computers. When you can't even pump fuel because of a glitch in the system then you're relying too dang much on them. There needs to be some type of bypass/workaround built into the system so the whole world doesn't come to a screeching halt because some propeller head missed a line of code.

According to my family member NO…. No one could buy any fuel of any kind card or cash…They had trucks held up or trying to find another fuel source in the area where they had fuel contracts

It likely didn't make the news because truck stops were about the least serious issues going on.

Cash? What semi drivers carry enough cash to fill a couple hundred gallons of diesel every day?

They could not buy even with cash… No fuel sales at all for a period of time. Trucking company is fairly large and supplies trucks/fuel etc.

Not like the good old independent truckers of the past that carried all the cash they needed to keep running….

Shows how close hackers can shut the country down for a week. If shut down that “long” the USA would be in meltdown.

That is wild. Those are two of the biggest truck stops and they sell thousands of gallons of diesel every hour. It is not unusual for one truck to get 180 gallons on a fillup.

Here's the TA in Laredo Texas. I spent the night here over 500 times. Only weird thing, they didn't sell beer. I had to go across the street to the Flying J to buy a few beers. Flying J sold LOTS of beer. This TA missed out on lots of revenue, I guess this particular truck stop was owned by a Muslim.

Well, they learned it the hard and very expensive way, but at least they did find the single failure point in that system.

Over the years, Windows has grown to be such a huge, cumbersome, and complicated operating system that this was pretty much inevitable. How many home users have had their machine crash after an update? I'd bet most of them. How many have booted up to do some urgent task only to be advised that Windows is updating and cannot be used until it's done — with no time estimate.

None of those things EVER happen with Linux. I'm just saying.

If you're gonna give a fella a disagree then at least come back with a cogent statement as to why you disagree.

A lot of ground covered in this thread. Seems like a good time to put it to bed.
