Boat alternator wiring

Kicking my butt. Got this alternator. Has way more terminals than the one I took off. The red and purple wires coming off alternator are self explanatory and match up with existing wiring. The only other 2 wires from the boat are an orange going to battery and black to battery ground. I hooked the orange to terminal labeled B. I also hooked black to E, and it wouldn't start, i believe i have no spark.. Moved ground to P and still nothing. I'm out at lake so don't have my volt meter to try and chase it down. Terminals are labeled B, E, P, AND L2. Any idea where they go?
Here's picks.
Old alternator. Nothing labeled.

Thanks for any input.
B should be battery or hot ,positive the other one ground
Yes. But where's the ground go? I've replaced probably 50 alternators in my life, never seen one with 8 terminals to hook up.
The ground should go on the terminal marked "E". That is for "Earth" which is what the Limeys call a ground.
I think you have more going on here than alternator problems.

Agree with Dunbarboyz. If your battery has a full charge then shouldn't the engine still start and run?
Yeah, it's weird. Last Sunday night I went to load it up. While driving across the lake a belt started squealing and my voltage gauge maxed out at like 19 volts.
I replaced the alternator last week one night. Thinking I solved the issue I went to put it in the water last night and it turned over good but wouldn't fire off. I don't have alot of tools at the cabin buy I believe there is no spark now. Considering the only thing that changed was the alternator I thought that could be the issue. The purple lead on the alternator goes to the positive on the ignition coil. I thought possibly I had the ground on the wrong terminal and it was grounding the ignition or something. Maybe I just burnt the coil out when the alternator was pumping out too high volts, idk, I'll have to buzz home and get my volt meter and see what's going on.
Thanks, that's where I had it hooked on.
Had a very similar problem, replaced the fuseable links near the alternator and the complete ignition switch, not sure which was the problem (both probably) but it cured my problem. Without a meter as you already know just guessing and throwing out dollars.

E is also applied voltage in ohms law E=IR
Any luck, you get it working?
Got it. I threw parts at it/tuned it up. After replacing the coil, cap, rotor and plugs i still didn't have spark. Following a flow chart I found online I found the problem to be the ignition sensor under the rotor. It was an updated style and required some wiring but it works now. I had to have fried that sensor when the alternator went out.
Glad you got it.
Glad you got it going!
Happy boating!
12v wiring drives me nuts.
So, one thing after another. Last night I put it in the water for the first time in 3 weeks. My brother has a cabin right next to me so I grabbed him to back me in the water and drive my pickup/trailer back to our cabins.
1st off, the engine hasn't ran started this good since I've owned the boat. I backed it off the trailer and started turning in reverse to line up towards my cabin and when I went to switch it to forward it wouldn't come out of reverse, no matter how hard I pressed the lever forward. I was going fairly fast in reverse and I thought I was going to torpedo the peoples dock and pontoon next to the launch area in reverse so I killed the engine and went running to the back to catch my boat but I heard a click when the engine died so I figured it had popped out of reverse. I ran up, restarted it and it went right into forward. I drove it over to my dock and again, it wouldn't come out of forward so I just lined it up and shut it off and coasted in. I didn't even bother looking at it last night. My brother thinks the idle is set too high, I'll adjust the idle before I take it out again.
The boat is a 21ft 1990 Sea Ray that I've had for about 6 years, always ran pretty good until this year. I'm actually picking up a friends 2008 Glastron deck boat today that I'll probably end up buying. We spend more time cruising around and stopping in the middle of the lake to swim than we do pulling tubes and stuff now days so I was thinking of doing the deck boat thing anyway. My friend had his for sale for a couple months now and told me to just grab it and take it out to see if its the route was want to go. His has a 5.0 Volvo so it will still have enough power to pull the watersports stuff. A deck boat boat is kind of like a cross between a ski boat and a pontoon so I think it will be perfect for what we do.
