About ten years ago, (age 71) I was feeling tired, so I went to my local M.D. to ask for a complete blood panel to see if a gland or something was out of whack.
I'm sitting in a chair and he says; "what's that!" pointing at my neck. (Lump I hadn't noticed)
Stage four Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. Six rounds of Chemo. They donated a "port" to my chest for the infusions.
Then a maintenance pill to keep the growths at bay after the last Pet. scan showed all gone.
Well, there were side effects; occasional diarrhea, (surprise surprise) small lesions like leprosy, and some more.
So one day the M.D. says "I know you don't like the side effects. They've come up with another drug for maintenance. Wanna try it?" "Hell yes says I." So I took it for fifteen months and one day I look at my cheek; it looked like I was hiding a pigeon egg in it and the egg was getting bigger. So, no side effects but the drug didn't work, either.
So four more rounds of a different (I guess) kind of Chemo and it blew out my heart muscle. Chemo stopped. Different kind of Chemo pill. Not maintenance, but aggressive Chemo pill. Works on about 40% of folks. Working on me. With side effects. One foot at a time blew up to a size 13 or more (swelling) Normal size 101/2. Left arm and hand super swelled. Feet returned to normal. Arm reducing in size. Much pain from body changing shape so fast, I guess. This drug is working; the tumors are diminishing but the whole point of this story is that it is not always Cancer that kills; It's the side effects of the treatment.
I had to sell my airplane that I'd had for nineteen years 'cuz I knew I couldn't pass the next medical, I have a small storefront gun store in the middle of Godforsaken Nevada, am a State licensed demolition contractor, and I've been licensed and have been making eyeglasses in Nevada since 1974. I know damn well I'm not getting out of this alive but but I will diligently resist the grim reaper as long as I can be of use and not be a burden to my loved ones.

Slinger, good for you . Fighting spirit always helps. As to flying ,could you have switched to light sport prior to renewing your medical and continued to fly ?
172November model too heavy for light sport. Not included in original post, oncologist and cardiologist agreed a pacemaker would be a "good idea". Plus, to be honest, there were many days when I felt like something to Mods wouldn't like me to describe. Maybe Mosaic can help if I get to feeling more human. I haven't failed a medical, so that's open.
I did buy a Subi powered Avid a year later as a "carrot" but I sold it too, thinking about being behind a 5500 RPM buzz machine, the more I decided this ole Dinosaur was gonna fly behind a brother or sister Lyc. or Cont.😉

I'm sorry for your circumstances and treatment side effects. Cancer is tough. Non Hodgkins Lyphoma killed my dad in 1982.
