A little range time with the .44 mag...

William81William81 Member Posts: 25,423 ✭✭✭✭

When I was a young man, I used to enjoy hitting the range with a .44 mag and running a couple boxes though it. I managed to fire 30 rounds today though my Ruger Super Redhawk. AND that was more than enough !!! Pretty much on target for hunting this fall.. Looking forward to getting out in the field with it in a couple months….

Anyone else started getting ready for the coming whitetail season ?

Love my .44 mag. My wife even shot it and did very well. She handled 10 rounds. She said the recoil actually felt less than the recoil of the 2 3/4" ruger with .357 loads. I said yep.

We never hunted with our handguns, although we'd often have them with us. Shot our deers with rifle or shotgun.

Good luck on your upcoming season. We require reports and pictures. Please.

Couple of my buddies took their kids out to my place last year and both of their boys got nice bucks opening morning. I bet they will be back this year. I haven't shot a deer in 15 years.

With my messed up arm, I might have to use my .480 SuperRedhawk to hunt with.

The last three years I have been wanting to use my 41 mag on deer but always end up grabbing the shotgun. This year though I plan on making a strong effort on using the 41 mag. Never took a deer with a hand gun before. I know, why the 41 mag instead of a 44 mag? I really can’t answer that other than I like the 41mag.
At 25 yards I can keep all 6 rounds in a 4 to 5 inch group with open sights. I will use the 210 gr. Hornady XTP at 1275 fps. Thought about a heavier weight bullet, but deer are fairly light and penetration shouldn’t be an issue. I plan on keeping all shots no farther than 30 yards with open sights.

Nothing wrong with using the .41 mag for whitetail.. A buddy of mine in Illinois has taken over a dozen of them with his. I have taken two with a .357 mag over the years and others with a .44 mag.

I have always treated handgun hunting the same way I do bow hunting. If you do not have a good clear shot, do not take it. Know your sights and do not take shots beyond you and the firearm's capabilities.

Get out there and give it a try waltermoe !!!!!

I have only taken one deer with a handgun and it was 41 mag at about 50 yards. No issue at all with the 41

44 Magnum is a good caliber and not difficult to handle if you fire it in enough gun.

Probably no big bores for this hunting season I broke my wrist about 6 weeks ago still a little tender the 610 will most likely be my sidearm this year

Way back in time my first 44 mag close to 50 years ago was a super blackhawk

I did the scare a friend dumb thing we had been in my back yard shoting 22' s and I pulled out the 44 and fired it off standing next to him of course it scared the crap out of him but then of course he wanted to shoot it

Some of my friends liked guns but owned few maybe a 2 or 12ga to hunt with and knew very little about the rest

And I was always buy the biggest most imitating one I could find but that went away after the real big and expensive big bore guns got popular,

Back in the day...…like many......I decided I needed a big bore magnum handgun. The thought of plugging a few feral hogs, rooting around my deer stand, was quite appealing. Plus......my uncle Jerry Don and I could enjoy some pickup frog sniping.........and not feel too undergunned.😇🤠

I bought a nice S&W 629 6" Classic Hunter 44 Mag.......and was ready. Unfortunately......years go by, and my deer hunting waned. In the 1990's I lost Jerry to a farm accident.……

So.......now the stainless beauty remains unfired.....NIB......but ready for any Trophy Bull(frog)s.😉

With a good solid hit in the right place, the 44 Mag will take down anything in N America.

I was never much for a glutton for punishment but I do love watching others. Still waiting for one of those where the shooter lets the gun bonk themselves in the head with a hand canon.

Those frogs must be huge that you need to shoot them with a .44 (holding my arms way… apart). I do like them S&Ws with unfluted cylinders.

I have read and heard after dirty Harry movie came out with the line this is a 44 magnum the most powerful handgun in the world and will take your head right off

S&W 44 mag sales went wild and for some years even now i guess they show up like new in the box only a few rounds thur them was/ is Way common

after the first couple rounds and recoil felt many of the implus buy 44's were put back in the box

That is exactly how I purchased my first .44 Magnum. A guy buried the front sight of his S&W 629 between his eyes. He sold it on the spot…

Hand gun deer hunted many years in Illinois, long barrel 44 Super Blackhawk with a 2X Leupold, really deadly.

Very nice combo, @asop . Still got it??

  • asopasop Member Posts: 9,006 ✭✭✭✭

Yep. Grandkids love to shot it at the range! Reloads are alot tamer than the ones I used to hunt with (25 grns. 296 powder, 300 gin.copper H.P. Hornady & Win. primers. Had to set the lead out to the second ring!

My girlfriend's daughter was up visiting from Atlanta. She doesn't allow guns in the house and her kids had never seen a real gun. But, little Aaron age 11 had a BB gun. I tossed a Coke can off the porch, and Aaron was shooing it with the BB gun.

A local "mountain guy" Don had been scraping the driveway with his tractor, he parked the tractor and he walked up on the porch for an icewater break. He saw Aaron with the BB gun, and Don said "Here's my BB gun." He flipped open the bib pocket of his overalls, pulled out a .44 magnum revolver. That surprised me I didn't know he had a big pistol carried like that. I asked to see the gun, he said "Be careful it is loaded."

The little girl Emily, age 9, burst into tears, jumped up and ran into the house. Emily was scared of guns. Aaron looked at the big pistol, he was fascinated, he had never seen a real gun before. But Aaron knew all about Clint Eastwood, and he knew, that of all the pistols in the world, that the .44 mag was the one carried by Clint. After Don left, Aaron said, in a perfect Clint Eastwood voice, "You gotta ask yourself one question. Do ya feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?" That was hilarious, an 11 year old kid with a perfect Dirty Harry imitation.

About every three hours, Aaron would repeat his Dirty Harry lines. It cracked me up every time. I bet he had some stories to tell the kids, about the "locals" of the Blue Ridge Mountains, when he was back at school in Atlanta on Monday.

allen griggs - Did S.W.A.T. come and arrest you for traumatizing the little girl? I reckon the school will have Aaron suspended and make him see a shrink for touching a handgun. I wonder if CPS will see you or the mother first?
