Not sure what to hope for on this one other than that it stays weak. A lot of folks could really do without another storm rolling in on them…. especially this quickly.

I hope the states of Georgia and North Carolina sue the federal government for misspending the money that had been reserved in the FEMA budget for emergency response. Actually, I hope they sue the government officials, starting at the top,who did the mismanagement of public funds.

  • JunkballerJunkballer Member Posts: 9,298 ✭✭✭✭

If the states do sue and win they'll only be winning taxpayer monies so it becomes an even bigger circle to us taxpayers. Jail time for appointed bureaucrats is the only way to stop such crimes then it would come down to a Presidential Pardon issue, the only winners would be the lawyers and government officials, bottom-line we taxpayers would still be on the hook. Yep, one big circle for us 🤬

Here in suburban Tampa, folks are starting to get riled up. Went out with the family yesterday to get a few groceries (regular stuff) and some Culver’s ice cream (love that stuff!). Every gas station was grid-locked, with people fighting for gas that wasn’t there. At Walmart, all the staples were stripped bare….. folks really wanted those eggs and bread! Haha! Sheriffs on-scene to keep folks civil. Noted that some idiots bought pickup truck loads of bottled water and are trying to re-sell it on Facebook for $35/pack. I hope they get struck with every last bottle.

Regarding the gas, I just laughed and told my wife…. don’t these folks fighting for gas know that the storm isn’t coming for a couple days? The gas trucks will deliver tonight. Decided I’d see how committed they were at 4 AM this morning. As expected……fresh delivery of gas, and nobody but me and one other fellow. Attendant, who I see regularly, and I made a friendly wager on how long the gas lasts today. He bet 9AM, and I bet 7:30 AM. We’ll see.

Topped off all vehicles, and even got non-ethanol gas for the generators and such. Hopefully, won’t need any of that stuff, but looks like this one may come right to my front door. Glad I’m not down by the water, but we do have a few looming trees to look out for.

As I said with HELENE…. I’m over this coastal lifestyle. 13 or 14 major hurricanes over 24 years is plenty. As soon as I do my time…. I’m out!

Stay safe! I would GTFO if you are within 10 miles of the bay. Tampa is going to take a direct hit.

We’re out in Brandon. It’s about 10 miles from the closest NE edge of the bay, but about 35 miles from the beach area and mouth of the bay. Not a flood zone or even a designated county evac zone. This one is similar to IRMA when we were in Miami……. with the error in the track, it’s hard to pick WHERE to go. The whole state is in play. You’d just about have to drive to the Carolina’s to get clear. During IRMA, we went to Orlando, and it ended up being worse there than back at our house in South FL. Plus, the traffic and rain make the exodus a potentially dangerous trip as well. We’ll look at some options closer to the central part of the state, but will likely just stay here and hope the shallower water and land chews it up a bit before it gets to our area.

Brandon is a few miles on the wrong side of the projected storm path, of course, that path prediction will change some.

Hang in there boys, get 15 gallons of drinking water and fill the bathtub with water.

Best to prepare and bunker down. Ga and NC are STILL repairing from the last hurricane. I(in Ga)lost power for several days, but I have friends still without power. Costing $45 a day to run a generator, needs it for work. Power lines and trees still down all over. NC is WAY worse.

We have friends who just moved to Florence Oregon from Sarasota FL.... Everytime one of these storms comes in I tell my mom I'm so glad they are out of it. They are my parents age and never planned on moving until there daughter did.

Your wish of weakness has not been granted. It just edged into Cat 5. It MIGHT weaken back down to a 3 by the time it clobbers Tampa. Fingers crossed.

I'm not an expert but 5 cats sounds bad.

My BIL can’t catch a break.

He lost his home in Ft. Meyers 2 years ago when a hurricane went through there.

He bought a new place in Estero which looks like it is in the path of Milton.

We live where the blue dot is on the upper right side of this map. We are 3.5 miles from the beach We are praying that it stays south of us but we are also praying for those folks that live south of us at the same time.

My wife's aunt lives in the direct path. Just north of Palmetto. She refused a ride and accomodations in Georgia. No idea what these people think about when hells kitchen is coming. I'm at a loss for words at this point.

My daughter lives not far from Orlando and she is a nursing case manager at a large hospital there. Her orders are to be there almost around the clock for pre and post hurricane medical needs. I hope the storm peters out before it gets there. Her area is expected to get lots of rain and wind.

Well, after studying the forecasts a little more and assessing our property, I decided to take the girls and leave. With 20 big trees looming, including one I just noticed was cracked at the trunk base from HELENE, I figured I would not roll the dice on the “expected” weakening. Seen them get it wrong too many times to bet the children’s safety on it. We headed north about 3 AM. VERY heavy traffic, but got to the Valdosta area, and still trying to find a spot to stay. May have to camp it out in the van…. Make an “adventure” out of it. Haha!

By the way, everything from I-10 north into GA looks like it has been bombed out. Unbelievable the wind damage HELENE left here. Whole area looks like ground zero of a tornado.

Also….saw this on the highway and just had to laugh. Guess EVs aren’t for every occasion…. like bailing out of hurricane alley in a hurry with 3 million other people. Need American power for that task!

Son flew out to Orlando last week to see a friend. Flight tomorrow was cancelled out of MCO. Now waiting it out on the Atlantic coast by Daytona Beach. Good thing his friend's stepdad in a county emergency management director.

Can teslas be used to power microwave? Now if they could be used to power homes that could be handy.

Frogdog, Brandon looks lucky, as the storm should pass just south of Tampa Bay and you don't get the massive stormsurge of a direct hit on Tampa Bay. But, if I was you, I would leave for Georgia like you did.

Likewise gjshaw, the projected path is just south of Tampa Bay, lucky for you. My girlfriend's best friend moved from Birmingham to Venice ten years ago where she bought a house. On the projected path right now at 8am, Venice is on the wrong side, the SE side of the storm. Venice will get 14 foot storm surge and 130 mph sustained winds, and tornadoes piled on top of that. On the current projected path Venice will be destroyed. I think Deb is going to move back to Birminham. I bet Deb is in Birmingham right now sleeping on her sister's couch, she is no dummy. Hope she's got hurricane insurance on that Venice property.

Grandson just flew into Orlando last night from Iowa. He is part of a crew that will work to restore power after the impact of Milton. He’s not sure where they will put them up during the hurricane. He said as long as it’s not like Texas this year. They had to have state police and national guard protect them, as people where threatening and attacking them because people didn’t feel they were working fast enough to restore power. Some people are just plan spoiled and stupid.
Guess they’ll be working 16 to 20 hour days, but on the clock until he gets home.

  • FrogdogFrogdog Member Posts: 3,027 ✭✭✭✭

My wife and I were talking about that too. Would be pretty neat if you could charge your EV pre-storm and it serve as a big power bank for your home afterwards. I’d think that big Tesla battery could run some light bulbs and a fridge for a while.

  • allen griggsallen griggs Member Posts: 35,669 ✭✭✭✭

I'll have to ask my brother. I know his grandson was charging his Iphone on the Tesla. Seems like you could use it to power up your house.

A neighbor is into battery power. He said that when his battery backups drain, he can charge them off his F150.
