From the article:
“A guy at REI told me that in a tight situation, a thick wool sock could turn fangs.”
I think we’d better add Tip # 8……. don’t trust in the advice of the kid that works at REI.
I would give my brother Frogdog a promote for better advice if I knew how.
Much of that same advice was in the old Boy Scout manual, and in the Reptile Study Merit Badge guide book. The best advice is watch where the heck you are going, and don't put your hands where you cannot see. I have never worked in the field in anything but hiking boots, I have never owned a pair of calf high boots except cowboy boots and I sure would not go to the mountains or hills in those.
I don't trust his math either. He said 27 to 32 species, then said 2 in the east (there are more) and 5 in the west. Wonder where the rest of them live…
Thick wool socks will protect from snake bite? Er ist einer Dummkopf!
Anyway don't blame me, don't shoot the messenger I didn't write it. Outdoor Life used to be a respected magazine.
Most of the article is fine, straightforward info. That one part just made me laugh.
And we were once young.
I stepped over a palmetto log once in Florida. Instant buzz, right between my legs. I froze, except to slowly draw my Single-Six loaded with a .22 WMR shot round. Fired straight down. And then I levitated.
PS: I have eaten fried rattlesnake. It's fun to bear one's fangs before biting.
A nice one !! At the Okeene, Okla rattlesnake hunt. Been there several times.
No like snake.
Dude, you are dating yourself, I was there in the 60's myself
They ain't all that crazy about moderators, kinda outlaw like that.
Nothing will ruin a deer hunt in the SC low country like seeing a 8 foot eastern diamondback.
I'd love it! I have worked with them, but never seen a wild one.
Wow, an 8 footer would be impressive to see, from a distance of course
My buddy in Georgia, Jerry, was an RN. Jerry and I were both big time deer hunters and we spent lots of time in the woods. He worked in the local hospital, night shift in ICU, 11pm to 7 am. Seven patients in ICU. Jerry and 5 female RNs. Several of them were single. 450 employees at that hospital, including me, and 400 employees were female. As Tom Cruise said in Top Gun in the barroom scene, "This is a target-rich environment."
Night shift in ICU is quiet, six patients are on breathing machines and unconscious. So the girls bring in snacks, one might bring a bag of Doritos and dip, one might bring a homemade apple pie, they pass the food around there at one in the morning. One night, Jerry brought in a dish, a bunch of deep fat fried chunks, looked like chunks of fried hot dogs, but light in color.
Jerry passed the dish around and all the girls got a bite, and told Jerry how delicious it was. Then, Jerry sprang the trap. He said "Surprise! It is fried rattlesnake!" Several of the girls got pale in the face. One ran into the bathroom to vomit.
Gee, I wonder why Jerry couldn't get a date at Baldwin County Hospital.
Tastes like frog legs. I like chicken better.
my ex wife lived in Okeene OK for several years. participated many times in the Roundup. Then she moved to Illinois and met me. We was about to go back for a visit once, but i was shifted to a 12hr day/7 days a week schedule so that was canceled. sounded like a week long beer party.
snakes are not for me
They all say they are not crazy about you either😈😆
