Just got a Ruger American compact in 5.56.Its 1 in 8 twist. I want to get the best accuracy out of it and am going to work up a load for it. I probably have a thousand 55 grain bullets and I am going to see how they group but I need suggestions on what heavier bullet weight would probably do best with the 1 in 8 twist.

62 gr

Wasn't the 69gr. bullet a "standard" for the 5.56, after they increased the twist in the M16?
......or am I imagining things......again?🤯
I'm not sure about that, some of you guys know way more about that than I do. I do know that 55 grain and 62 grain are the two common military loadings available. The 1:7 twist barrels seem to like the 55 grain loads from my experience.
We have a Ruger AR-556 with 1:8 twist. We used winchester white box 55gr ammo to sight in at 50yds. We were thrilled with the results and love our gun.

My Rock River with custom SS , 1-8 twist likes the 62 grain green tips much better than 55 gr.
Shoots way better than I can after a few warn up shots.
When i first saw this post without any comments this morning, I was gonna say I am only accustom to them being widely available in either 55 or 62 grain, but I don't reload so I figured I'd let others respond first, I have a few that shoot 5,56 some bought others that I put together from 80% receivers and the uppers have both 1-7 and 1-8 twist… as long as they can be within a 6 inch circle at 100 yards I didn't worry about it and I know some people are a lot more concerned with tighter tolerances but mine will stop a two legged predictor so that is all I am concerned about, If you are hunting and reloading you will need to do your own testing since each rifle can decide what works best with that particular firearm…my 2 cents..
My 1-9 shoots 55gr 1-8 likes 62gr. I have a 223 bolt action 1-12 that shoots everything.
1-8 twist is sort of a compromise so should handle 55-68 weight bullets fine. 62 is right in the middle of that spread.
I don't pay much attention to twist rate on AR type barrels but have found a couple of the 1-7 that don't perform well with 40 grain bullets.
