Saw @Toolman286 post on "porch hunting" about 5 mins later I looked out my office window in to the side yard (porches on front and back) and this guy was still on the ground and just waking up this morning about 7:40 am Central time North Texas. By the time I got phone against the dirty window and screen he heard me touch it and this was him just standing up. Got a couple more pics but this is the best one so enjoy he's a young one for sure and of course some dogs are bigger than Texas deer.😁

Beautiful view. I have seen Texas deer and yes they wouldn't take the size prize.
Thanks @susie there is a pond down in those trees above and to the left of his rack and another hay pasture behind the trees (dry creek bed) and a smaller pond out of view to the right. Only twenty acres but it's mine.
The joys of living in the country.
Theres nothing like country livin'.
Good picture, nice looking boy there.
nice rack
Great picture Bret! I always thought EVERYTHING was BIG down there in Texas. If you wouldn't have mentioned the bucks smaller size, I'd have presumed it was a big one. 🙂
Bret.......nice pic.
Ponds?????..........like in bass ponds??!!😉😇
I only have experience with one Texas deer. It was 3 am, I was driving the Big Rig on I-10, way out in the countryside rolling west on the road to San Antonio. There in the darkness, suddenly a big 8 pointer appeared in front of me, he was walking across the interstate. I swerved to the left 3 feet, but still hit the hind end of the deer. [If you swerve enough to miss the deer, but you flip the 18 wheeler over, you have had a real bad night.]
I went back to look at the deer. He was huge. At least 225 pounds. I've shot about 40 bucks in central Georgia and the biggest was 150 pounds. There's lots of deer in central Georgia, but they are small.
This Texas deer was the biggest whitetail I had ever seen. I recalled the expression "Everything is bigger in Texas."
I guess this was the fluke monster buck of Luling Texas.
@62vld2042 (Kevin) no bass or other fish, some frogs at times and visiting water fowl but the ponds are just stock ponds that are seasonal and the bigger one even dries up some years in drought. The smaller one dries up every year.
@allen griggs They do get bigger farther out in the less populated area but I'm located closer to Fort Worth/Dallas and more probably get killed by vehicles than by hunting. At my place I see does all the time, small bucks once in awhile, usually smaller and younger than this one, but they are pretty rare around here to get much bigger than this guy. I guess he wasn't more than about 140lbs. I hit one in Washington DC area about 20 years ago, not a fun experience.
Awwwwww shucks.......man!😟
My one, and only, deer.....…circa Dec. 1987......Jack County…southeast of Bryson.
Over the previous years......I'd put my time in..…in the woods, including two trips to Colorado. Never having even seen a live deer....…with antlers.
He dressed at 167 lbs..…..and the taxidermist "skinnied" the neck area(dang it!).
Thereafter...…...I was into coyote calling.
had a good friend I worked with who didn't hunt or seem to have any interest. I ask him one day before he retired if he would take up hunting when he retired to have something to do. He told me he went hunting once with his brother in law and he had grabbed the rifle out of the truck just as it got daylight he started across the road to head into the woods when he heard something and looked up and a 12 point was standing there staring at him, he shot it and then went back across the road to the truck and went to sleep. said he never went hunting again as it was to easy………!!!
Beginners luck or what
Another weird thing about Texas deer.
I was rolling down some interstate in west Texas in the big diesel truck one sunny afternoon, suddenly a spotted fawn ran across the road 50 yards ahead of me, and ran off into the mesquite bushes. Now, I've seen lots of spotted fawns in Georgia, but I never saw one that went 250 pounds. I thought "Dear God I hope I don't get called in for a random drug test today because I must be stoned on something…"
That night I researched it on my laptop and found that it was some imported species, axis deer or something, the does have spots even when fully grown, they bring them over from India and put them on game ranches for people to shoot. Evidently this one escaped the game ranch and was running wild in the mesquite patch.
Exotic imported species are not allowed in Georgia, but, Texas plays by their own rules.
